Chapter 7

"Oh, no, I'm late," Ken mumbled, looking at the wooden clock on the wall of the sunny yellow kitchen of his house on Tuesday morning. He stuffed the rest of his toast into his mouth and downed his orange juice. Grabbing his keys, he swung his backpack over his right shoulder and raced out the front door of the stately stone-faced house. He hopped down the steps of the front porch and sprinted across the lawn.

But suddenly he found himself flat on his face in the dewy lawn. Something had wrapped itself around his ankle and had sent him and his backpack flying. His hands flat on the earth, Ken raised himself from the ground, as if he were doing a push-up, and stood awkwardly. Hopping on one foot, he disentangled the white material from his left ankle, looking at it curiously. Toilet paper.

His eyes narrowing, Ken searched for the source of the damage. And he found it everywhere. His entire front yard was strewn with toilet paper. It covered the freshly cut grass, the neat hedges, and the green shrubbery in front of the house. Even the tall oaks were wrapped with long white strands. It looked as if there had been a huge snowstorm.

Ken swiped at the branches of a tree, pulling off long streamers of toilet paper. He grabbed on to the bark to climb up the tree but suddenly stepped back to look at it. A big white bow had been tied around the trunk.

"Some gift," Ken said, clenching his jaw angrily. He ripped the bow off the tree, throwing the wad of toilet paper onto the ground.

Ken stalked around in a fury, collecting the long streams of toilet paper from the yard and trees and throwing them in a huge pile in the center of the lawn. They must have used a dozen roles of toilet paper, Ken thought. What a waste. Don't they know anything about conservation?

A few minutes later Ken stepped back to survey the damage. He had managed to get all the big pieces off the lawn, but tiny bits still covered the grass like flakes of confetti. The paper had disintegrated in the dew. And streams of toilet paper still waved from the upper branches of the trees.

"I don't have time for Palisades's stupid games," Ken muttered in annoyance. It would take him forever to clean up the lawn. And he had to make sure everything was in order before he went to school. He didn't want his parents facing this mess when they got home from work. More important, he didn't want them to know what was going on between the two schools.

Throwing his backpack onto the lawn, Ken raced back into the house. He fumbled under the kitchen counter and pulled out a big box of large green trash bags. Running out the back door to the garage, he grabbed a rake from the wall and went back outside.
