“Well, here’s your proof!” Wasser threw an early edition of the New York Times down at my chest.

“That’s a rude awakening. No ‘good morning’?”

She pointed to the newspaper sitting on my chest. “Read it!”

The bold headline jumped off the paper.

“Explosive Report Exposes CIA Agents”

I scooted to the end of the bed and looked up at Wasser, who was still standing above me. “When did he do this?”

“No clue when he submitted the list to the news, but they released it a few hours ago. Against our wishes.”

I looked down at the headlines and then back up at her. “So, he actually did it!”

“Yeah, there are over two hundred names on the list. That’s a lot of dead and destroyed lives.” She rubbed the bridge of her nose vigorously. “Well, you wanted proof. Now you’ve got it!”

“I’m really sorry to hear that. I guess our work is done here,” I said as I slipped a shirt on.

“No. It’s just getting started.”

I squinted. “Huh? I’m not following.”

“Fuller has thousands of names. This was just the beginning.” She started to walk away. “If he’s not stopped soon, it’s going to get a whole lot worse.”

I threw the rest of my clothes on as I followed her up the stairs. The agents were running around like chickens with their heads cut off. The Agency was scrambling, and it was obvious the report caught them off guard. I could only imagine what was going on in the ever-elusive “upstairs.”

Wasser walked over and grabbed two cups of water. She was about to hand one to me when my phone starting buzzing. I looked down and saw it was an unknown caller. I ran outside where it was quiet, and she followed me.

“This is Dr. Abbott.”

“Hi, this is Carl Fuller. Is this a good time to reach you?” he asked.

I looked at Wasser with bulging eyes. “Yes, it sure is.”

“Doc, I’m out of town and won’t be back for a while, but I spoke with those who interviewed you, and we’re all in agreement. I wanted to personally call and invite you to QuoAc. Normally, we’d wait for the background check to clear, but the project we need you on just can’t wait. I hope this doesn’t catch you off guard. The sooner we get started, the better.”

My Adam’s apple dropped. Wasser stared at me, obviously wondering what was going on.

“Mr. Fuller, that’s really great news. I’m honored. I’d love to get started as soon as possible. You tell me when, and I’ll be there.”

“How about this morning?” He wasn’t kidding.

I stared down at my watch. “I’ll be there in an hour to an hour and a half.”

“I’ll let them know.” Fuller sounded elated, his voice rising. “You’ll be a great addition.”

I hung the phone up and looked at Wasser. “I’m in! They want me there immediately.”

I expected her to rejoice. Instead, she nervously twisted the back of her hair.

“What’s wrong?” I asked.

“The timing is just a little too ironic, isn’t it? I mean, he just so happens to be out of town when the names are released and then invites you to come in immediately.
