Mick squats on the deck of the airboat in front of Smith. âI want answers. And I want them now. Why did you hold a shotgun on us?â
âI wouldnât have done it myself,â he snarls, âbut Iâm under orders.â
âWhose orders?â
âOne of Gambinoâs lieutenants. I donât know her name.â
âHer? A woman?â
âYes. I was supposed to take you deep into the bayou and force you to jump into the water. Youâd have been the first ones Iâd ever fed to the gators alive. They usually bring me dead bodies.â
Repulsed, Mick asks, âWhen was the last time you fed someone to the alligators?â
âI have no idea, you son of a bitch. Itâs not like I keep details in a planner.â
Mick points to the alligators. âWe didnât save your sorry ass just to hit a brick wall.â
Mick grabs the back of the manâs shirt with one hand and his belt with the other and begins to stand. âIâm not at all above tossing you back in.â
âWait a minute. Wait a minute!â Smith shouts. âIt was about a month ago.â He pauses. âYeah, on June first. I remember the day âcause I got a DUI that night. I was drinking to forget. Iâve had to get a ride to work ever since.â
âWhat was different about that day? What did you need to forget?â
âIt was the first time that Shelly ever brought me a womanâs body to dump.â
âWhoâs Shelly?â
âShelly Baker. She works for Gambino.â
âIs she the lieutenant you mentioned a minute ago?â
âNo, sheâs an underling to that lieutenant. The interesting thing about Shelly is that she looks exactly like the woman she had me dump. I mean identical.â
âWho was the woman you dumped?â Mick asks.
âI donât know. Some bigwig attorney.â
âDoes the name Pam Williams mean anything to you?â
Smithâs eyebrows lift in surprise. âYeah. Now that you say it. That was her name. Gambino had us torch her office a few months before Shelly killed her, but it seems she didnât get the message. Shelly said she waited for the woman on the floor in the back seat of her car in the garage. Williams was going to the airport to fly to some writing thing. Shelly used a garrote. She always says, âNo muss, no fuss.â Because they were identical, she took her place. I guess Gambino has a long-term job for her on the West Coast because I havenât seen Shelly since.â
Wailing sirens split the air. In moments, two white squad cars with blue detailing, including a starâits five points supporting an elongated half-moon arched over itâscreech to a halt. Four car doors fly open, and four officers step out, guns drawn.
âSet your weapon on the pier, maâam, and step away,â one of them says.
Emma looks at Mick, who nods.
âNow you two,â the lead officer says, âget out of the boat and donât make any fast moves.â
âI canât move fast,â Smith complains. âIâve been shot twice and mauled by an alligator.â
âThen stay put.â
He nods at two of the officers. âGo guard that guy, will ya? And you two,â he says, pointing his gun at Mick and Emma, âstep this way.
