CHAPTER 14
The second Sandy deactivated the spirit circle, my phone started spitting out missed call and text notifications. Rafael growled into his own phone once, and within two minutes, Boris and a fleet of armored cars were outside the little warehouse in Georgetown.
I had a million missed calls from Backman. Nervously, I called her back.
âLittle drill bug,â she answered the phone. âYou found him yet?â
âNo. But Iâve got a lead on him. Apparently, heâs still being moved, but Iâve got the address of where he will end up. Heâll be there by Friday, so I've been told.â
She let out a little grunt. âWell, you might have to come back home in the meantime.â
âWhy?â
âThe ridges of the valley are starting to destabilize rapidly,â she growled. âThat little monster of yours stuck in the pocket dimension is going to bury us all.â
Rafael, still on the phone, shot me a glance and nodded. He was getting the same reports as me. The Ancient was upping the earthquakes, trying to force my hand. He wouldnât care that I couldnât do anything without Leroy.
âYou might think about coming home, see if you can talk some sense into him, stop him from shaking the town apart,â Backman said. Her voice sounded strained. âMarigold is trying to magically stabilize the valley, but itâs taking a lot out of her.â
âI got it,â I muttered. âKeep her hydrated and her feet on the ground.â
âIâm doing my best.â She hung up.
I threw my phone on the seat opposite me. âGod damn it.â
Rafael took my hand and squeezed it. âIâm sending scouts to see if we can find Leroy en-route to the address in Skid Row,â he told me. âAnd Iâll send a team to monitor the whole neighborhood.â
âI want to go now,â I snarled, tears of frustration leaking out of my eyes. âBut they might change the location of his prison if they know weâre coming. We need to do this by surprise, or else we might never find him again.â
âYes,â Rafael agreed. âWe must wait until Leroy is there.â
Hopefully theyâre not hurting him. Yet, Agent King had said. Heâs not being hurt yet.
I let out a groan. âItâs so ironic,â I said quietly. âIâve never been more powerful than I am right now. And itâs making exactly zero difference to all this heartache. We still got caught in Mullinâs trap, Leroy still got taken, and I still canât go and get him.â
âNot just yet,â Rafael reassured me. âWe will, though. We will. We know exactly where he will be the day after tomorrow,â he murmured, kissing my knuckles. âAnd we will get him, I promise you that. For now, letâs go home.â
