October 24th, 2084, 8:57 p.m.,

The battles of the main roads were lengthy, but not too much. Callan’s Western Company finished first, followed by the Eastern, then the Northeast and Northwest Companies respectively. The rest of the day was spent remotely deliberating with the construction crew, planning for the Scarlet Kingdom’s inevitable retaliation efforts, and more than anything else, going through the wares and goods left behind by the departed red-clads. It was only after they’d been at it for hours that they’d realized Devin Dross when he approached with a woman in red, handcuffs around her wrists.

“The hell is going on here,” Zayvier said in a rare outburst. John looked up from Cal’s side, hand still gently on the side of the boy’s face that bore his bandaged injury, to see the dark skin, curves, black hair, and the distinct red uniform of the Scarlet army. He looked at Zay, who corrected himself instantly. “I’m sorry, Rairyu.” John waved it off.

“No, no, you’re absolutely right. Dross, the hell is going on here,” John inquired sharply, eyes narrowed. The look on his face made Devin freeze, and even startled the captive by its sheer intensity. Though he hesitated, Dross brought her forward to meet the Director if out of nothing but respect for him as a person and a personal mentor.

“Sir, this sniper,” this envy of angels, he thought as he spoke to the Director formally, “fired on her own comrades while I fought them. In the hours since our initial attack, she’s given me no sign that she bears any hostility towards our people.”

“What do you expect is gonna happen here, Dross,” John asked, and folded his arms. Cal stirred in the background. Even though he’d been given a hasty dose of pain medication, it would take a lot more than that to ease the discomfort. Manny stood by him and held his hand to try and sooth him a little more. John returned his gaze to his subordinate.

“I have information about the Kingdom that might useful to you,” spoke the woman. John eyed her more closely, and though nervous, she continued. “All of their key bases. Their intel. Their communications networks. Their plans for the Wastes. I’ll give it all up willingly if you take me with you.” John’s ears perked up at the mention of the Wastes.

“Name,” he demanded, and the girl shook.

“Zahara Boyd,” she responded.

“You betrayed your comrades,” he said flatly, his piercing eyes just as intensely hot as the sword he brought to life in battle. “For what reason?” The woman hesitated for a moment. It was difficult for her to talk about her life back in the Kingdom. But she knew that if she didn’t say anything, her life would be forfeit right here and now.

“I’m dark-skinned. I might’ve been fighting with them for a time but I was never their comrade. I was a tool, plucked from a family bound by a military past and fine-tuned for war against people who share more in common with me than the ones I was raised around.
