Chapter 16

Kieran and I found shelter in the norm. People who knew us also knew of our wives, and there was never anything weird about us going away together every now and then. The only one we’d worried about was Maggie, but perhaps she had successfully suppressed her knowledge of Kieran’s nature, because she even encouraged our camping trips and, beginning in autumn, our sudden interest in going to football games.

While Kieran had booked us tickets to our first away game, I had taken a crash course in Seahawks facts on the internet to convince Allison I enjoyed the sport.

I didn’t, for the record. American football was dreadfully tedious and boring. Five minutes on the clock could last a fucking hour with all the breaks and commercials.

Real football had been a lot more interesting to pretend to follow, but…well, America didn’t have that. Not counting the graveyard league where European players came to die.

We took other outings too. Tonight, for instance, Kieran was coming with me to the launch party for Lincoln Hayes’s new studio in Seattle.

We wanted to enjoy ourselves and have a few drinks, we’d explained to our wives, so we would crash at my sister’s place and come home tomorrow.

It was as bulletproof a plan as it could be, given that Allison and Brianna didn’t talk. My sister hadn’t hidden her animosity toward Allison’s years in a school so far away, and frankly, my wife was a little intimidated by Brianna. I couldn’t blame her.

“Wow.” Allison came out from the kitchen to see me in the hallway, and she gave me a once-over. “New suit?”

I nodded and adjusted the cuff links. I’d noticed some of my other suits were too big. The scale showed no difference, but I’d started running with Kieran on the weekends. He made me want to take better care of myself.

Besides, the way he looked at me after a run was enough to live on for a whole week.

I glanced at myself in the mirror and hesitated. “Is it too much black?” Both the dress pants and shirt were black. I was forgoing the jacket and the tie, knowing I’d be surrounded by what Lincoln called “industry rats.”

“No, you look…very handsome.” Allison gave me a small smile. “Now I’m kind of jealous you’re taking Kieran instead of me.”

I frowned at her. “I asked you first.” Knowing full well she’d decline. Her new job was demanding and tired her out. She’d stopped living, claiming she had no energy after work.

Thankfully, she’d gotten her act together where the boys were concerned. For one, she’d taken over driving Nate and Jess to after-school activities. It had resulted in Maggie doing the same with Jaylin. For two, in an attempt to reconnect with Nathan, Allison took the boys out every Saturday for lunch and…such. Tomorrow, they were going to the mall in the Valley to get Nate new shoes. Jess needed a new lunch box too.

Being a first grader was an adjustment for my youngest, and he’d started throwing tantrums when he didn’t understand the teacher.
