Chapter Thirteen

I was in my room watching TV and on the computer, just wasting time, chilling, when I heard Mama come in from shopping. I went down stairs to help her with the groceries.

“Hey ma, what you got, anything good?” I took two bags from her and put them on the counter in the kitchen.

“Hey babe. Thanks. I just got the usual, chopped meat, chicken, goodies. Oh, girl,” she said, “just look in the bag while you put the stuff up.”

I smiled, and she smiled too. I said, “Okay, I just thought you would run down a list for me.”

She took the milk out of the bag and went to the fridge and moved some things around to make room. Then the phone rang. She said, “I’ll get it, you can put everything else up. I’m gonna make you work for your meal.” She winked at me.

Mama picked up the phone and said, “Hello?” She paused. “Yes, this is she.” I just happened to look at my mother’s face. It was a more serious look than I’d ever seen.

All of a sudden she dropped to the floor and dropped the phone and screamed a scream so loud and hard it hurt my heart. I ran over to her as she was on the floor, put my arms around her and said, “Mama, Mama what’s wrong?”

I knew that it would have been simpler to pick up the phone, but I was afraid, because it reminded me of the phone call with O. I was afraid once again of what I might hear. So I paused for a Moment, just looking at Mama.

As I grabbed the phone, Mama fainted.

I just held her hard, and said, “Hello, who is this?” I heard the voice at the other end. It was the police, with the most horrible news we never could imagine, once again.

About 35 minutes later, me, Torie, Daniel and Daddy were at the police station. Mama was devastated and was home with Kim. She could barely move.

Daddy didn’t seem to be as upset as me and Torie. I could hardly stand. Daddy was at the desk speaking with the police. He put his hand on his forehead and held his head down.

At this time we only knew Nell was hurt really bad by Michael. Torie and I were hugging each other and Daniel had his arm around Torie. I couldn’t take it any more so I ran towards Daddy and held his arm and said, “Daddy, what is it? What happened?”

Daddy didn’t say anything. He just stood there and kept his head down. So I looked at the policeman. “Please,” I said, “what’s going on? The only thing we know is that my sister is hurt. What’s going on with Nell, where is she, please?”

The policeman looked at me and said, “What is your name?”

Then Torie ran over and Daniel too. “Her name is Adrianna and I’m Torie. We’re Nell’s sisters. Please, can you tell us anything about Nell, I mean Lanell?”
