It was after nine by the time Ruby met Gabe Ruiz at a parking garage downtown, in the business district.
She felt a little guilty when heâd given her the address so readily, considering sheâd prohibited him from coming along with her to the prison. He didnât seem to be holding a grudge about it, which was a good thing.
After the day sheâd had, she didnât need any more drama. As much as her spirit was willing, her body was dragging.
They entered a modern, all-glass skyscraper that was a contrast to the architecture of the many neoclassical monumental buildings in the area, and took the elevator to the top floor.
When Ruiz pressed the button, Ruby stared at the director. âFloor fifty. CBN Enterprises. Arenât they a financial company?â
âSomething like that,â Gabe said with a shrug. âI think theyâre an investment firm. If I had anything to invest, Iâd probably know better.â
She yawned. âItâs late. How do you know heâs here?â
âCalled security. Turns out, heâs been here since last night. Heâs been sleeping here.â
âReally? Thatâs interesting.â
âThatâs what happens when rich married people fight. They donât need to make up. They just avoid each other.â Gabe grinned up at the climbing numbers above the door. âBelieve it or not, the reason they had two houses is because they didnât really like each other very much. They liked the way their combined salaries looked on paper, but they mustâve annoyed the hell out of each other.â
âKids?â
âNope. DINKs.â
âDINKs?â
âDual income, no kids,â he explained. âSo she had the mansion out in Virginia and he had the apartment here in D.C. But when the maid died, Valerie moved into his apartment in D.C. and he said he was going to start sleeping in his office, to give her space. At least, thatâs what he told security.â
âOkay,â she said. It sounded a little odd, but her own private life wasnât that much better. âOdd that he didnât come in to give a statement.â
âDefinitely. But not really unexpected. Bet he gives us the excuse that heâs too important to leave the office.â He gave her a sideways glance. âSo everything was really okay with seeing Vallejo again?â
She nodded, even though at the mention of his name, she heard Vallejo calling out, Ruby, in that sickeningly sweet, singsong voice. Suppressing a shudder, she said, âYeah. It was fine. I mean, I donât want to make it a habit of seeing him, but it was definitely less stressful than last time.â
At least, that was what sheâd told herself on the ride home, hoping to convince herself.
She added, âThe only problem was, it was a waste of time and gas. He didnât give me anything.â
âNothing? Did you ask him about John?â
She nodded. âHe didnât really seem to care that heâd been arrested. He congratulated me. So either heâs bluffing, or John really was just a copycat.â
âOh well,â Gabe said, and was that a hint of a smug, I told you so smile on his face? âIt wasnât totally wasted time. At least you ruled that possibility out.
