CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

“I AM SO SORRY I missed your party. How was it?”

“Necessary and good. I think all the men who weren’t so sure about me as a choice felt better. Six million has a way of doing that. That was all the chatter I heard. I’m sorry you missed Phillip.”

“I’ll make it up to him. Promise.” His eyes twinkled. “Sit down, we have a serious matter to discuss. It seems you’ve wished yourself into a hard news job. Our man in Afghanistan has been airlifted out.”

“Afghanistan!”

“Baptism by fire. I always thought the Middle East should be your first real assignment. Do you think you could handle it? It could be your lucky day or your worst nightmare. One thing is for sure, it’s a shot to get out of that management chair you keep saying you hate so much and hit the ground running. Find out if the hard news is really for you once and for all. This is as hard as it gets. It’ll be quite dangerous and you can say no.”

“No. No, this is great news!” Ashley said without hesitation. “This is fantastic. As an intern when I was on the news desk, I went to a shoot-up in South Philly…not exactly the battlefield but I’m very interested and confident that I can.”

“Great. Then let’s get the paperwork done.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you’ll have to sign an additional “war zone” contract with us today. I’ll also need you to speak with our psychologist and medical director before you can be confirmed for the assignment. Dr. Hagar will be waiting for you when we’re done here and you’ll see the med guy tomorrow after you meet with HR.”

“Okay on the psych, but I’ll need a week to have my attorney give this contract a look over.”

“No time for all that. You’re going to have to trust me. If you want to realize this dream of yours, it’s now or never.”

Ashley looked at Mel for a long time. He wasn’t joking.

“But why do I have to sign today?” She pressed.

“Because your assignment starts tomorrow right after you get medical clearance. And I have to leave the country today so as I said it’s now or never. I have arranged for a seasoned crew to fly with you and I’ll have people on the ground waiting for you. You must follow the rules of engagement to a T. If you want out, we’ll bring you home. Just say so.”

Then it all happened so quickly. The next morning, donning her, I-don’t-take-no-for-an answer suit, Ashley headed to the Human Resources office of WNCB, determined to push back her departure date by a day. There was no frigging way she was getting on a plane to enemy territory with no experience on the fourth day of any month. What kind of coincidence could that be? It was an omen! Her tirade had been abruptly halted by the marble in front of her who was sculpted to look like a woman! The cold blue eyes didn’t even flinch at her request.
