Wade wouldnât look at Jackie. She was sitting right next to him in the guidance counselorâs office, with those two cops from assembly and two state police detectives. She kept saying his name and yet he wouldnât look at her. Wouldnât speak. âWade,â she said again. âPlease â¦â
âWade,â Mr. Penny said. âAre you all right?â
Jackie wanted to slap Mr. Penny, with that suspicious tone of his, the way he tilted his head to the side the better to examine the state of Wadeâs pupils. She half expected him to ask her son how many fingers he was holding up. Heâs not on drugs, you judgmental ass. âOf course heâs all right,â Jackie said. âWhy wouldnât he be all right?â
âNobodyâs in any trouble here, maâam,â said the male state police detective. So condescending, that âmaâam.â âWeâd just like to ask your son a few questions. We can all go by the station, if you feel like you guys might be more comfortable there.â
Right, because a police station is the most comfortable place there is. It made Jackie think of something her grandmother once told her: âNever believe anything said through a mustache.â
âWade has school today.â She threw another pleading look at her silent son, feeling as though sheâd stepped into one of those dreams where you canât move and you canât speak and nothing goes the way itâs supposed to go. âHe needs to get to class.â
âItâs perfectly all right for him to miss class,â Mr. Penny said, âconsidering the circumstances.â
âWhat circumstances?â
The female detective was saying Wadeâs name now, asking him to please respond, again and again. Jackie leveled her eyes at both the uniformed officers, neither one of them much older than her son â the boy officer in particular, with his teenage skin and the way heâd practically cried onstage. A child. âWhat circumstances?â she asked him directly.
He turned away. What a strange response.
âMrs. Reed,â said the female detective. âA witness claims to have seen your son with the carjacking victim the night Liam Miller was killed.â
Jackie blinked at her. âWhat?â
âThatâs a lie,â Wade said, coming to life. He looked at Jackie. âI wasnât with anybody.â
âAccording to the witness,â the detective said, âa young man with your name and fitting your description was at Club Halifax where Aimee En had been performing â¦â
âAimee En?â Jackie said. âThe singer from the eighties?â
â⦠between six and eight pm. You want to tell us where you were during those hours if you werenât at Club Halifax?â
âHe was at his SAT class. It goes on till seven pm,â Jackie said. She looked at Wade, and again he wouldnât return her gaze. âWerenât you? Wade?â
He stared at the desk. âIâm sorry, Mom,â he said softly.
Jackieâs face heated up. She felt dizzy. âAimee En?â she said again. âAimee En was the carjacking victim?â As though that was the point of the story â the celebrity tie-in to Liam Millerâs death â and not the fact that her own son had been at a club when
