CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“The attorney’s here,” Hobbes said.

“Already?” Eve looked up from the evidence form she was filling out, following due process as she checked the ghillie suit into evidence at the FBI field office. They’d booked John Johnson into holding only a few minutes ago. The man wouldn’t have had time to even sit down in his holding cell.

“I guess Coburn came through on his word,” Hobbes said, “I got a some intel on the attorney, too. Amanda Brownstone, and boy does she look expensive. Not a county-ordained public defender, if her Versace purse is any tell. Kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it?”

“It makes me wonder what – or who – Coburn is really protecting. Is it Johnson? If not, what’s going on here that Coburn and Johnson both don’t want us uncovering?” Eve pursed her lips into a brooding pout as she mulled the questions over.

“Well, the good news is that we can start the interrogation right away, since we don’t have to wait around for the lawyer,” Hobbes said.

“Right,” Eve said, returning to the paperwork and jotting the final few signatures with a hasty flourish. “Let’s go.”
