Chapter 165:

Abscess

IT’S A DREAM COME TRUE. Again and again, the same cliché came to mind. Her happiness was just that magical.

“You’re back early, young master.”

“Did you tag along purely to poke fun at me?”

“Not at all. I merely thought you’d be gone longer since you were so worried about the little lady.”

“And so are you, clearly, since you insisted on driving me here.”

As Yulan climbed into the back, Chesuit greeted him from the driver’s seat without turning his head. He was a lousy chauffeur—he didn’t hop out to open the door for his passenger, and he started the engine right in the middle of their conversation. He was an aggressive driver to boot. Supposedly he’d only ever driven a car to buy groceries for the Vahan estate, so he wasn’t trained to ferry passengers. Since it was just for today, Yulan didn’t feel like criticizing every little failure.

“Is she doing well?”

“Depends on your idea of ‘well.’”

“I don’t mean by my standards. I mean by yours.”

“…Stable, but not in perfect condition. Both of them.”

“Can’t say I’m surprised.”

Chesuit gripped the steering wheel with one hand and rested the other against his chin, his elbow on the window frame. Yulan was, if only technically, a central figure of Duralian society, and yet this man regarded him the same as any other child. He didn’t feel the need to walk on eggshells and massage his master’s ego with obsequious etiquette. Yulan didn’t care one way or the other. He didn’t hire Chesuit to be his toady.

“I told Miss Marin what happened to you, by the way.”

“Bet she was shocked, eh?”

“She was scared you actually punched him.”

“I was joking at the time. Never imagined I’d end up doing something close to it.”

“Well, I wish I could have been there to see it.”

He would have loved to point and laugh right in the bastard’s face. To Chesuit, it was a scandal that cost him his job, but to Yulan it was pure entertainment. Even if it wasn’t all that funny, it would have been a great opportunity to scoff at the man’s tattered pride.

Indeed, what a shame it was that Yulan wasn’t present to witness it. While he was at it, he could have stomped on the bastard’s comatose face. Being knocked unconscious was nowhere near significant enough for that man to play the victim card—no, he needed to be ground into paste. Not that it would have sated Yulan’s rage to merely beat him.

“So, when do you think I can start my new job?” Chesuit asked.

“Two days from now, if you like. We’ll need to start by ordering and arranging the equipment to your specifications.”

“Even better. I’m honored you’d ask for my input.”

“I’m waiting to see how Vio’s condition improves before I bring her in, so that’s still undecided as of now. If she doesn’t like it, we’ll have to start again from scratch.”

Yulan’s most pressing task was to prepare the house into which Violette would move from the hotel room. If only her pigheaded
