Chapter Forty-Five

I hoped this detour would pay off. I didn’t need a delay. Jax turned off the main road.

Tall pine trees bowed to wind. A dark cloud briefly exposed the sun, itself a shape-shifting plat-eye, before returning to its pre-storm gloom. Silence crept in, exposing me to the crush of fear for my daughter. Had this creepy Plat-eye been near her? Had he touched her? I couldn’t stand the image. I knew she wanted me to come for her. I seethed at Plat-eye’s man now following us.

Jax pointed out in front of us. “We’re getting close. Watch for runners.”

“Runners?”

“Airic pays kids who live back here to run out and startle drivers.”

I recalled my own near-miss on the night of the sitting. “He’s a fraud?”

“No. He likes to amp up the myths. It amuses him when people spin stories about ghosts on this road. The kids get some money and tourists turn around.” Jax looked over at me. “For the record, coming here was not my idea.”

I held up a hand. “I accept full responsibility, I promise, no matter what happens. I know you don’t want to do this.”

“So, you owe me. Tell me about that map Puca drew. You thought it was from someone else. It scared you.”

“It’s a different circumstance, unrelated.”

“No withholding, remember?”

“It’s personal.”

Jax snorted. “If you’re worried about your secrets, don’t go to Airic. He’ll see a lot more than you want to show him.”

I hugged myself and breathed out. “Okay, okay. I thought it was a girl. Someone who disappeared years ago. A friend. We never found her. It’s bothered me. That’s all.”

“She didn’t seem present during your session?”

“I focused on her, but no.”

“So, you think she’s trying to show you where she…”

“I don’t know. A medium told me two days ago that a girl matching her description wants to tell me something. Naturally, I assumed that’s what Puca intended to show me, so I probably set myself up. Should I mention this to Airic?”

“No. Let him tell you what he sees. But this girl’s never been present before?”

“No. I’ve tried contacting her, believe me. I’ve used every way I could to find her.”

“Still, Annie, there’s a theme. She’s missing. You were consulted for a missing child. Now we have others missing.”

I hadn’t seen that connection. “And Airic supposedly helped find a missing kid, which inspired my first visit to him.” I didn’t add my father into this mix, but it seemed that I’d become a magnet for these cases, doing as he had done.

“Was this girl a close friend?” Jax asked.

I shifted. “My best friend. She got on a motorcycle with a stranger. She never came back.”

“Ran away?”

I waited a moment to center myself. Finally, I filled in the blank. “The guy was arrested. Tommy Ray Bruder. He’d killed others. I interviewed him in prison. He gave up nothing. So, it’s really not related.”

Jax took a breath, like he was about to comment, but then stopped. He looked in the mirror. “Hold on. I want to lose this cop.
