Eli
I canât help it if Iâm not attracted to you.
Those words had hit me as I went to bed last night and seemed to be on constant repeat throughout the day today. Had I really spoken those words to Megan?
I had been frustrated with the situation, and the words had flown out of my mouth. They had definitely been true all those years ago when she had handed me the love letter. I had been young, and cocky, and had enjoyed the attention I had been receiving from girls. My focus had completely been on Desiree back then, and although I had enjoyed other girls flirting with me, I didnât really notice them.
After getting home and calming down, Iâd replayed the scene in my head.
And I had lied.
Megan wasnât the blatantly obvious beauty like Desiree. She was cute in a more adorable fashion. I didnât know exactly how to describe it. Desiree was the kind of girl you looked at and immediately wanted to kiss. Megan was the girl that you wanted to wrap your arms around and cuddle, knowing all the time that youâd have to work for that kiss.
She was attractive. And I hated that I had said otherwise. But there was no scenario in my head where I could correct my statement and not be super awkward.
But the lie bothered me.
Which had to be why I was nervous walking to her lunch room table. It wasnât because I knew Desiree was watching. I didnât care about that.
I forced my shoulders to relax and casually sauntered toward Meganâs table. She mustâve warned her friends we were coming, because none of them seemed surprised when I set my tray down and sat next to Megan. âHi guys. Whatâs up?â
âWe were just talking about Sandersonâs quiz. That was a killer,â Ruby said.
Mrs. Sanderson taught calculus, and I had her class later in the day. âThanks for the warning,â I smiled. I focused on Megan, who had remained quiet. âHow do you think you did?â
A slight blush colored her cheeks, and I grinned at her unexpected uncomfortableness. âFailed. Definitely.â
âMaybe we can study together for the next one,â I said. âMy dad is an engineer, and he gets all that stuff.â
Meganâs blush deepened, and I found that phrase circling in my head again. Definitely a lie because she was completely adorable like this. She didnât answer. One of the other girls at the table said, âI want in. I could use all the help I can get with calculus.â
âSure,â I said. âItâs a date.â
Aaron placed his tray on the table. âWhatâs the date? Are you talking about the new superhero movie? Because Iâm there.â
âWe can do that,â I said. âWe just need to pick a date Megan is off of work.â
Megan lost her awkwardness, and her eyes flashed. âDonât assume I want to go.â
âYou love those movies,â one of her friends said.
âYes, but he doesnât know that.â Then she turned to me. âDonât make assumptions about me.â
I smiled at her. âThen I guess weâll have a lot of foosball sessions.
