Twenty-three

Carson and JD arrived back in the office thirty minutes later. There had been an accident on the freeway and traffic had backed up because of the rubberneckers. As they entered their office, Carson’s mobile started ringing.

“Carson,” he answered.

“Will, it’s Emma,” said the voice on the other end.

“Em, good to hear from you,” he said, sitting at his desk. “What have you got for me.”

“The DNA results are back. They confirm that the victim is Fiona Sarah Nikol. I saw a news story earlier. Poor family, but why so much publicity?” Emma said.

“It appears as though Fiona’s father is a friend of our Commissioner,” Carson said, logging onto his computer.

“Oh,” Emma said. “Nice to have friends in high places, huh.”

“We’ve just returned from her apartment.”

“And?” Emma asked, intrigued.

“Spotless. Immaculate.” Carson said.

“Strange for girls,” Emma commented.

“That’s what I said.”

“They can be grotty little madams.”

“Also, she’d recently been to court. That’s why her DNA would have been in the system.”

“I see,” Emma said, sounding surprised. “I don’t recall it making the news.”

“Me neither.” Carson knew full well that measures would have been put in place, preventing that story from being leaked. It would have obviously caused the family much embarrassment. “When will the toxicology report be available, Em?”

“Probably by noon tomorrow.”

“Ok. I’ll speak to you then.”

“Night, Will,” Emma said and hung up.

Carson walked over to the whiteboard and removed the six photographs of the other missing girls. He then logged onto his computer and printed the photo of Fiona that had been circulated on the police broadcast. He stuck the photograph to the whiteboard.

“JD, we need to split up.” He said, turning to face JD at his desk. “I’m presuming the Commissioner is unaware that Fiona’s disappearance may be related to Apollo Bay, but that won’t be the case for much longer. And when he does find out, he’ll want answers. So, I’ll get you to follow up on the CCTV and the court paperwork. I’ll speak with the parents and flatmate and see if the girls had a cleaner.”
