Chapter 9

“Valentine’s Day.”

“What about it?” she asks.

“The holiday that is upon us? It’s an anomaly.”

“You think so?”

We turn the corner and I open a door. It’s a closet. We step through, her first. It smells like dry lavender in here. Sheets, folded neatly, are on top of one another, all through the shelves. The floors offer nothing more than solitary brooms and vacuums.

“Think about it. A day out of an entire year where we ‘celebrate’ lovers. I find it eerie and disturbing.”

“Because it glorifies the psychos on the street that feel entitled to a love from an unwilling—”

“And unknowing,” I add.

“Interest?” she finishes broadly.

Her arms are through the sheets, her body leaning in hard to the far corners.

“Exactly,” I beam, joining her.

The sheets are cold enough to suppress the throbbing pulse coursing through me. She stands close, close enough for me to see her pale brown eyes. My, is she beautiful. I touch warm skin in a world of coolness, and it raises more than my fair share of hairs.

“It’s not here,” she suggests. “Maybe we keep looking in another room?”

“Because we were simply going to stay here, alone, talking about how horrible day for lovers is.”

“Touché.”

I shut the door behind me, and we keep walking through the well-lit mahogany halls. Through the boardroom. Through a small library. We stay in the library for about ten minutes, searching through the first edition classics when the thirst to know my company a little more beguiles me.

“Mia. How do you know her?”

She snaps the thin and spindly book shut and faces me.

“Why do you ask?”

I climb the mini ladder to my right and peruse the poetry section, minding the bulbs along my ascension.

“She seems to know you better than the rest of us. Is there a reason why?”

Imogen shrugs and tucks the book back in its place.

“We studied together years ago.”

“And she just called you up to come here?”

“She found me. Just as I assume she found you.”

I exhale loudly and flip through the Torah. There’s nothing in here. Not even a secret opening in the wall.

“She sent me a video from my past. I don’t know how she got a hold of it but there it was all the same. Women – I rarely think I can trust them. Sometimes they all seem like my ex wife.”

“You were married before?”

“Unfortunately. She was in it for the money.”

“Ah!” she exclaims, with her hand at the back of the wooden shelf.

“Found it?” I echo sharply.

She shakes her head, revealing a bookmark. And then she throws it back in.

“I almost wanted to ask you. How do you just sign ten million away? You almost feel arrogant.”

“Aside from wanting that video not getting out,” I reply with a helping hand from her as I alight from the steps, “this felt like something I could try. I have not spent enough time with people as it is and I am in all respects arrogant as hell.”

“I never would have known. Hrmph. Did you have a chat with Oswald and Stanley?”

“I did.
