Chapter 6 (Cora): Her Caress

I listened to Hunter as he talked, and I felt for him. I mean, I wanted to be there to help him cope with the loss of his daughter.

After a bit, he finally settled down, and then I took a deep breath.

“I do know what you’re going through, Hunter,” she said.

“What do you mean?”

“I just … I know the pain you’ve gone through. Listening to you talk about this reminds me of my own story,” I said.

He looked at me, and then I nodded.

“You’re a great father, and honestly, I’m a little jealous that Ivy gets such a great dad. I wish I had that, and sometimes … I wish I could just forget the pain I’ve gone through,” I said.

He looked at me, and I wondered for a moment if I should tell him everything.

“What do you mean?”

“Well … it’s a bit awkward. It’s about me and my sister Gina,” I told him.

“Want to talk about it?”

I paused. I did want to. I mean, I definitely felt for him with losing Ivy.

“Well … I didn’t have the best home life. I came from a poor, broken home. My parents were always fighting, both drug addicts. My dad beat my mom. It was hell. I had a little sister named Gina, and I was kind of the only parent she had. Whenever my parents would fight, we’d hide out in the room together, and I made sure that she ate, was dressed for school. Hell, I even made sure that she made it to school.”

“Jesus,” Hunter said.

“Yeah, and honestly, I started dancing at sixteen, lying about my age and whatnot, to provide for her. I wanted to be the parent that Gina didn’t have. She was my little sister, and I wanted her to have a good home, since well … I never got that,” I told him.

“I don’t blame you.”

“Yeah, but … one day, child services came and took Gina away,” I said.

I saw his eyes widen with shock.

“But how?”

“I was working at the time when it happened. I don’t know where they took my little sister or even where to find her. It made me realize that they got her when she was vulnerable. And I’ve … I haven’t seen her since,” I said.

It happened when I was seventeen, about a year after I took Gina and ran away. I was always providing for her, dancing because it was the only thing I knew. I did eventually get my GED, but during that time, I was a high school dropout. I did all that I could. I wished I could’ve been better for her—”

Suddenly, Hunter reached out, giving me a big hug. He held me tightly, and I felt my arms move, hugging him back.

“Thank you, Cora.”

“For what?” I asked.

“For telling me that. I’m really … sorry for being such a dick. It’s just been hard. I’ve had all of these feelings that just keep swimming around, and I hate it. I don’t know what to do about any of this, but I’m really thankful for you being by my side,” Hunter said.
