CHAPTER TEN

Chandler stared blankly at the undertaker beside him. He could not understand why the undertaker had just uttered the name of the school teacher.

‘What’s this gotta do with Molly?’ he asked.

Farmer looked straight into the eyes of the younger man. ‘It’s just a notion, but I got me a feeling that this is all about young Molly, Lane.’

The startling statement caught the hunter by surprise.

Chandler raised his eyebrows in bewilderment and looked long and hard at the undertaker.

‘What about Molly?’ he asked. ‘She’s just a young gal who teaches school. Why would a gang of insane killers come here and start killing because of her? That don’t make any sense. No sense at all.’

Farmer moved even closer.

‘It makes perfect sense, Lane,’ he argued.

‘Explain, Cecil.’ Chandler had been smitten with Molly ever since he had first set eyes upon her. The thought that she could be to blame for this outrage did not sit well with him. ‘Explain how Molly could have anything to do with any of this.’

‘Calm down, Lane,’ Farmer urged his younger companion as he could see the confusion in Chandler’s face. ‘I don’t mean she had anything to do with this, but she’s the reason these senseless killers came here.’

‘Keep talking, Cecil,’ Chandler said bluntly. ‘Tell me exactly what you mean. I get kinda ornery when innocent gals get blamed for things they couldn’t possibly know anything about.’

‘You don’t understand.’

‘Then make me understand, Cecil.’

The undertaker suddenly realized that apart from the dead sheriff, he was the only man in town who knew the truth about the pretty school teacher. He had to try and explain to Chandler.

‘Listen up, Lane. Molly Drew ain’t her real name,’ he began. ‘The sheriff was ordered by a couple of secret service hombres not to reveal her true identity to anyone because she’s under government protection. Seth confided in me because he wanted somebody else to know who she really is.’

Chandler could not believe what he was hearing.

‘It sounds a bit far-fetched, Cecil,’ he said.

‘I swear it’s all true, Lane boy,’ Farmer insisted as he gripped Chandler’s muscular arm tightly. ‘Seth was scared and by the looks of it, he was right to be scared.’

The hunter thought about the bloody situation and shrugged, ‘I reckon you’re right, Cecil. Keep talking, I’m listening.’

‘Molly’s real name ain’t Drew,’ Farmer continued. ‘It’s Corbin. Molly Corbin. She’s really the daughter of Colt Corbin the rebel outlaw. That gal suffered a heap of abuse and the secret service put her here for her own safety. I don’t know how, but somehow Corbin learned that she was here. Him and his bunch of killers come looking for her this morning and I’ll bet every cent I’ve got, they found her.’

Lane Chandler’s face went ashen. It was as though every drop of colour had been drained from his flesh as the old timer’s words sank into his weary mind.

He shook his head and stared blankly at the floorboards inside the funeral parlour. ‘Colt Corbin is her father?’

‘Yep,’ Farmer nodded.
