WARREN'S BODY HADN't ached like this since he had fought Matt ten years ago when Matt wanted to become a beta.

At ninety, Warren was barking close to middle-aged for a wolf and every muscle screamed his age in bursts of painful reminders.

Derek hadn't moved in an hour. Shallow breathing and the occasional whimper were the only signs the boy lived. Maybe he'd been wrong. Maybe this wasn't the change.

Wolf snapped.

Nope. This was the real thing. He was just going to have to stick it out.

Lying with Derek gave him time to think. Think about Stacey, his last successful transition. Think of all the wolves he'd helped cross over in the past thirty years, of Paul and the ones who didn't make it. Of his own past.

Warren had grown up with wolves his entire life. He was the last of his parents' pups and they let him do pretty much whatever he wanted. He'd lived with small packs all throughout the US and Canada and even spent a few years in Germany after the war, but never felt he belonged anywhere until he met Jake. Strong, protective, fair and unflinchingly the Head Bitch In Charge, she was the alpha he'd always wanted. He'd been with her since the beginning. Side by side they built the first cabin of the compound. Forty years ago, no one would have thought the New York City pack, with its urban environment, she-wolf leader and a handful of wolves no one else wanted would become the thriving group it was today. He built this and nothing short of Jake kicking him out would make him abandon his brothers and sisters.

Then he met Noelle. She wasn't pack. She wasn't even wolf. She was a damned federal agent not against using her position to threaten them all. Yet he couldn't get her out of his mind. She was trouble. She was human. He shouldn't. He couldn't. But he did. He wanted her. And more important, wolf wanted her, too.

Which meant Derek had to make it. If her son died on his watch, Noelle would never forgive him. Hell, he wouldn't forgive himself. No matter how much it hurt, Warren would have to double down and give it his all. For Jake. For Derek. For Noelle.

Warren forced his creaky muscles into action and moved closer to Derek. They were skin to skin, back to front, like spooning lovers.

Derek's wolf didn't like that. A sudden rush of energy sent the boy's body into an inhuman contortion. Head met knee in a way Olympic gymnasts couldn't pull off. He cried out. Warren howled in response. Then, shit got real as Warren's wolf broke from his leash.

“Not pack. Destroy.”

Whimpers. Cries. “Don't,” the young wolf begged.

“Wrong. Bad. Go.”

“Please.”

“Submit.”

“Why?”

Growl. Sniff. “Mother. Respect.”

“Guardian. Vow.” The boy wolf understood.

“Pack?”

“Yes.”

When Warren finally took back control of his wolf, the bathroom was a scene worthy of a horror slasher movie. Blood pooled on the floor. Heavy splatter covered the walls. He did a quick take on his body. He had some scratches and a nasty gouge on his thigh, but most of the blood was not his.
