Jason peeked around the corner of the carved hallway. The only light came from the torches, but the flames blew around in the wind, making their fires small.

He was very close to the exit. He could feel it. This had to be ground level, and all he had to do was follow the cool wind until he was outside, out of these caves, and then he could sneak back down to the village. He could get his sister away from that asshole David.

He just had to get out of here now without anyone noticing him. He’d made it this far. He just had to go a little farther.

Jason took in a deep breath and then stepped out from behind his corner.

A hard weight immediately slapped down on to his shoulder. Jason jumped three feet in the air backward. “Whoa!”

It was Kraigan, and after Jason spat up his heart and was finally able to breathe again, he yelled at the guy. “Don’t do that to me!”

Kraigan’s eyes were hard. “What are you doing out here?”

Oh, right. The whole against-the-rules, put-to-death thing. Jason scrambled for an excuse, pointing his thumb over his shoulder. “I, uh, thought I heard a noise.”

Kraigan still looked as though he wanted to hit Jason. “That’s the wind from the rear entrance. A window must be broken. That’s all. Go back to your rooms.”

“Right, with all the other peasants?”

Kraigan growled at him.

The growl sent a fearful shiver up Jason’s spine. He locked his feet into place and crossed his arms. “Besides, maybe I was going to check it out for myself, make sure this place is actually safe for me and my best friend to stay in. You dragons can’t be keeping it all that secure if there’s a broken window somewhere near the back entrance. How many entrances are there to a place like this anyway?”

That last part was important information if he wanted to try another way out. One that Kraigan hopefully wouldn’t be keeping his eye on, like he was with this place.

“That’s not your business,” Kraigan said.

Of course not.

“Why not? If I’m going to live here and work here, shouldn’t I know how this place works? I knew how my last village worked, and this place pretty much is like an underground village.”

“It’s a village that you’re not privileged enough to know about. You just got here. You know more than enough to keep you satisfied until Dravick decides what to do with you.”

“Uh, what do you mean, do with me?”

Kraigan rolled his eyes. “Not every human we take from your village stays here. Depending on your behavior, it might be decided that you’re better off in another nest, or, if you’re caught trying to escape, then it could be ruled against you that you’re a threat to
