Freshman Spring

WEEK EIGHT

“I DON’T THINK YOU’RE A ROBOT,” MAX SAID. He was pretty serious about it, so she made sure to really sell it when she waved the whole sentiment off.

“Sometimes I wish I was a robot.”

Even though they were deep into spring, 2:00 a.m. was a sort of perpetually chilly time of night, her windbreaker barely staved off the crisp breezes as they strolled along a silent side street.

He shook his head. “Even back in high school, when they would say shit like that . . .” He grimaced, eyes darting over to her. “I mean, not in a bad way. No one was ever mean about it they would just—”

“It’s really not a big deal,” she said. “I know what I’m like. I live in my head.”

“Yeah, but you aren’t,” he said. “You care about things. A lot, and you’re so motivated and you always know what you’re doing.”

“Just takes a little research,” she offered with a shrug. She sipped on her milkshake and shivered a little. “Like there are answers out there if you know where to look.”

He rolled his shoulders back. “I’ve never known where to look. I think I wake up every single morning and have no idea what I’m doing. And every morning it feels like I’m choking, and I keep asking my brain, ‘What are we gonna do, Max? It’s another day and there’ll be another one after it, just hours and hours, Max, and you gotta fill ’em. What are we gonna do about that?’ And I never really know.”

She stepped carefully over every crack in the sidewalk ahead of them.

“Sorry,” he said, rubbing at his forehead. “I just mean to say that it’s cool that you know what you want and exactly how you’re going to get it. It’s reassuring. That maybe I can figure something out, too.”

She leaned to the side so her arm bumps along his.

“Some days I think I don’t want to be a doctor at all,” she said. The words just left her mouth and floated through the air, becoming property of the polluted city air. “It’s just been that thing I’ve been planning my entire life around and I don’t know how to want to do anything else. And I’m too deep in it now to turn back. So, I guess I’ll just be a doctor.”

“You want to be a doctor,” he said. A car next to them honked and he jumped a little, shoulders tensing and relaxing in less than a second.

“Some days,” she said.

“I have chemistry with you, Astrid,” he said, shaking his head. “You love it. I sit next to you and you’re just so into it. You stare at that textbook like it’s the love of your life.”

She took a long sip of her milkshake, letting her hair fall over her face.

He has chemistry with her. David would laugh.

If he was here. Which he wasn’t. Because she and Max have been doing this thing a lot this semester where they hang out
