The blood relatives
When I reached Santragachi, it was 12:20 am. The railway station was isolated. There wasn’t a single soul. I crossed over to the other side through the over-bridge. At least, there I found proof of life.
‘I have reached home earlier. I couldn’t text you before because I had a nasty fight with mom.’ I texted Jia.
I sat beneath a tree on a cement platform. I waited for Jia’s reply. But she didn’t text back.
‘Are you already asleep?’ I texted again.
‘Sorry for late reply. Was reading. You shouldn’t have done what you did today.’ she replied back.
‘Please don’t start now. Just now I handled mom. I cannot bear another round of quarreling with a loved one.’
‘One more thing. What were you doing with the huge backpack?’
‘Dad needs it. He is going to Siliguri tomorrow for a case.’
‘Oh! I’ll be sleeping now. You too shut your eyes.’
‘Goodnight! Muah. Take care.’
‘Gn. Muah. Take care.’
‘Shubhoratri.’
‘Shubhoratri.’
By the time it was 12:45 am, Jia was fast asleep. So were my parents. So was half of West Bengal. I was awake, waiting for my train of glory. The crowd started growing at Santragachi station by the hour. By 2 o’clock the small waiting room of the Santragachi station felt like the queue before any F.L. shop. There was not enough room for all the passengers, yet people who accompanied the passengers to see them off tried to accommodate themselves in that tiny little room. They seemed relentless. I was thankful that I chose the cement pavement under the tree for myself. But I didn’t count in one factor; blood-sucking intolerable bites from -
This day relenting God
Hath placed within my hand
A wondrous thing; and God
Be praised. At His command,
Seeking His secret deeds
With tears and toiling breath,
I find thy cunning seeds,
O million-murdering Death.

Yes, you guessed it right, mosquitoes! The last shop near Santragachi station was opened till 1 am. And the last thing I bought was four packets of cigarettes and two packets of ‘biri’. Whereas I should have bought a mosquito repellent cream. I regretted not buying that cream throughout that night. First, they started checking me out, then they came near, later they came nearer, then they touched my body, then they kissed me and then they started giving passionate love bites. Yes, I’m still talking about the mosquitoes. I couldn’t sit idle in one place for a single moment. The little blood sucking menaces made those few hours a living hell. At first, I was the only one sitting under the tree. Later people gathering there. One of those persons was Shankar bhaiya. He came to sit beside me. At that point of time, I didn’t know his name. I tried to start small-talk with him. He ignored me and went to sleep. I was envious of him. Rather I’m still envious of people who can sleep anywhere they want. The more irritating thing was that his blood wasn’t as sweet as mine. Because the mosquitoes seemed to surround me only.
