Step Thirteen: Be the bad guy. Someone has to take the role.

Be as bad as you need to be in order to keep the target safe.

Constantine laughed. This was the problem? “The dude is trying to get his five minutes of fame. Not a deal.” Now, if he could get back to Juliet and properly finish what he’d started, he could be a happy man.

“It’s a deal if people—people like Alexandre—believe it. It’s a deal if Alexandre starts saying you’re not her real consort, and he tries to separate you from Juliet. This Christian Hale jerk could mess up our plans. We have to get ahead of the situation. Right now, we’ve got the news that you and Juliet are a couple airing at the same time that Christian is telling everyone he’s madly in love with her and that she is crazy for him.”

“Juliet doesn’t care about him.” A low snarl.

Holden grimaced. “I know that. You know that. We need the world to know that. A public declaration from Juliet saying he’s wrong and that she is fully committed to you will cement things before you depart for Lancaden. We need her to do it, not you. Because if it’s just you saying stuff, you’ll look like a jealous boyfriend. Which, um, not to tell you your business or anything, but the way you instantly made fists when I mentioned Christian’s name…”

Constantine looked down. Whoops. He had done that.

“You do seem like a jealous boyfriend. So props on the acting.” Holden cleared his throat. “I do have to wonder, are you, by chance, a method actor? Because I think I see a little lipstick on your—”

“Fuck off.”

“And good night to you, too.” Holden saluted as he stepped back. “So shall I arrange to have the reporters at the airport? I can make another tip to our pal Jeremy or…” He snapped his fingers together. “Better idea. Maybe we should just plan on an exclusive sit-down with him? Not an overly long thing. Maybe fifteen minutes, tops. Just need to get everything lined up so the cover story doesn’t explode in our faces before we can even really get the plan going.”

“She hates that jerk.”

“Christian? Good to know, we can go with that in the interview—”

“Jeremy,” he snapped. Fuck, he could still feel her body trembling against him. He could feel her. Taste her. He shouldn’t have let his control slip. He had, and he’d given in to the fierce desire he felt for her, and if Holden hadn’t come banging his big-ass fist against the door, Constantine knew he wouldn’t have stopped with Juliet. Tasting her wouldn’t have been enough for him. He would have taken her.

And never wanted to let go.

“Well, I can’t say I know anyone who is overly fond of the reporter, but it’s a devil-you-know situation, isn’t it? We need to discredit Christian before people start to think that you’re lying and—”

“Juliet doesn’t like the press. She was about to jump out of her skin tonight.
