We spent a great afternoon together, taking them for an early dinner and then treated them to ice cream. It wasn’t anything special, but they were thrilled. We liked to get out of the house with them as much as possible. They really are good kids. They drive us absolutely crazy sometimes, as toddlers will, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. As we were driving home, they were having trouble keeping their droopy eyes open. After we arrived though, and they were bathed and in their pajamas, they came alive again. They tackled my husband in the living room and used him as their own personal jungle gym. I couldn’t help thinking as I watched them play how good he was with them. I’ve always thought that if you want to know the measure of a man, watch him with his children. And Tyler is the definition of a great dad. He teaches the boys and plays with them; offers them kindness and patience, and tough love when they need it. What’s more amazing is that his own father was in and out of his life growing up, then disappeared when he hit his teen years. He never even had a model to follow; it was just something that came natural to him. My heart melted at the thought of a dad not wanting to be in his child’s life – I didn’t know what the kids would ever do without Tyler. I didn’t know what I’d ever do without him, either. I think I fell a little more in love with him that day.

He continued to let the boys climb, jump and roll on him until they just couldn’t go anymore. They lay down in the floor beside him, one under each of his arms. I turned the TV on with the volume low to relax them off to sleep. I sat on the couch staring at the precious sight; the three most important people in my life, all cuddled up to one another. Tyler looked up at me and smiled. “You know, this is one of my favorite things.”

“They look awfully sweet all tuckered out down there.”

“They’re not the only ones tuckered out,” he said with a yawn. “I’m gonna go lay them down, take a quick shower and hop in bed.”

“Do you need any help getting them down?”

“Nah, I got it,” he said as he stood up, scooping our littlest one up in his arms.

“Okay, I’ll go ahead and lock up and I’ll be right behind you.”

I locked the front door and heard the baby’s door shut. As I went through the house making sure all the lights were off, I heard the click of our oldest son’s door being pulled to. The last one I heard I knew was Tyler going into our bedroom, where our bathroom adjoined, to get in the shower. A revelation suddenly stuck me: we had never had sex in the shower. As soon as the idea had hit me, I wanted it.
