Mike glanced at his watch for the umpteenth time. Twenty-five minutes had passed since Samir let him know he was positioned to spot anyone coming out of the ingress off Cravens Lane. At this point, it was looking like Troy had been sent out the Foothill Road ingress to the north. Or he could’ve been directed straight through to one of those outlets just to make sure no one was following him.

At this point, Mike was so on edge, he was ready to head down the road off Via Real just to see what he might find out, regardless of the possible consequences. Anything was preferable to just sitting there.

When his phone vibrated with an incoming text, he flinched. He picked it up off the dashboard and read Samir’s message. Instead of texting back, Mike called him.

“I guess great minds do think alike,” he joked weakly, referring to Samir’s suggestion that they explore the other two routes into the agricultural tract.

“We’ve been waiting for Troy to come out of there for a total of forty-five minutes,” Samir pointed out.

“I know. Most likely, Troy was routed onto that dirt road in order to disorient him, or to make certain no one was following him. And if either of those scenarios are correct, they may have directed him straight through to the exit you’re now watching, or the one on Foothill.”

“Yep, that’s what I’m thinking too,” Samir said. “But for the sake of thoroughness, and since we don’t know for sure if we’ve lost him, I think we need to head down those roads ourselves.”

“We might as well. But personally, I think Troy’s long gone.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right,” Samir replied glumly. “If we can’t find anyone, we can at least check out any barns or storage sheds, which would make good places to hide a hostage or a Porsche. If we find nothing, then we know for sure we’ve lost him.”

“Let’s do it.”
