Another body was found.

This time, the Snakes were lucky enough not to be anywhere near the corpse.

Yet they weren’t so lucky with whose corpse it was.

Rebecca Moon.

“Maybe whoever is doing this is actually doing us a favor,” Jolene mused, chewing on her piece of bacon. “You know, by taking out all our enemies for us.”

“You’re too positive for my liking,” Andro commented, scrunching his nose.

He patted the bottom of the maple syrup bottle, as if that would help more syrup pool out of the empty glass container.

“Romeo, we are in dire need of more syrup,” Andro called over his shoulder.

“On the way, kiddo!” Romeo called back from the kitchen.

“Do we have to talk about corpses over breakfast?” Blaze grumbled, pushing his bacon from one side of the plate to the other.

His stomach was upset, which was something new for Blaze.

It was not like he’d had that much to drink last night with Andro and the rest of the rockey team.

But today his stomach was mad at him. And it let that be known to Blaze by refusing to stomach anything he tried to consume.

“Ah, yeah, we fucking do,” Val said. “Especially when we have a fucking investigative journalist coming in five minutes for a friendly chat with us.”

Val sent a glare toward Jolene, who simply shrugged.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t think it was such a big deal,” she said. Then she jerked her chin towards Alecto. “And if you wanna bark at someone, bark at her. She was the one who suggested the Snakes get close and personal with Leigh.”

“It seemed like a good idea at the time, okay? We need to find out who’s behind the murders, and I thought having an investigative reporter on our side and within arm’s reach would be useful,” Alecto said.

“I don’t like the idea of using my girlfriend for our gain,” Jolene said.

Blaze snorted. “Of course, you don’t.”

Alecto eyed him sideways. “I know you don’t. I don’t mean to use her for our gain. I was thinking more in a way of getting her help to protect us and our House.”

“Well, at least someone in this fucking House is using their brain to accomplish things.” Val pinched the bridge of her nose. “We haven’t made much progress in finding a secret and secure way to track the murderer’s magic, which leaves us with very few options. Whether it’s using her or getting her help, we’ll have to take advantage of your girlfriend, Jol—”

Her sentence was cut off by the doorbell ringing.

Jolene was on her feet immediately. She went running out of the dining room at the same time as Romeo entered, a fresh bottle of maple syrup in one hand, a plate full of pancakes in the other.

“What’s that about?” he asked, placing the food in the middle of the table.

“Her new girlfriend is coming over,” Alecto said.

“Perfect timing!” Romeo beamed. “I was just finishing my new signature winter cherry pie. I’ll bring some over for this special occasion.”

He disappeared back into the kitchen whistling a tune under his breath.
