The landscape company came two days later. We walked around the entire property while we talked about possibilities to expand it into a suburban oasis. When he started talking about bright colors and flowers to attract butterflies, Bastian brought him inside to show him the house. I waited on the deck for them.

When they returned, Bastian reiterated that the outside must match the feel of the inside. With that, Bastian let him leave to contemplate a more appropriate design.

I joined Juniper in the kitchen on the morning we were expecting to receive the first delivery of flowers, almost a week after the landscaper’s first visit. He’d dug me some flower beds and I had a detailed map of where each flower should go. Because Bastian had made it very clear that even the outside décor must match the rest of the house, a small fortune was being spent on flowers, since those that were appropriate were not locally grown. Not even in greenhouses.

We’d already eaten breakfast and cleaned up the mess and we were now making a pie for after dinner. The nice thing about a family this size, was that there weren’t many leftovers. That meant we were rarely eating anything for multiple nights in a row. Including desserts. Juniper continued to bake until his heart was content, and we always enjoyed a variety of sweets.

“I’ll make the crust,” I told him as he wrapped an apron around me. I could tell by the way he stilled for just a second in tying it, that he didn’t like that idea.

“Crusts are tricky,” he said, his hands brushing my hips when he’d finished the tie. “How about you make the guts and I’ll make the crust?”

I shook my head. “Loosen up, June. Just tell me what to do. We can do it together.”

He studied me for a minute, and I could tell he really didn’t want to give up that control. The kitchen, especially the ovens, were his domain. Part of me wondered if he’d actually agree. It was a small victory in which I nearly did a little dance that he gave in. At least, when he wasn’t looking. As soon as he turned his back on me, I shimmied and shook my ass in excitement.

He turned back to me with his brow raised. Maybe he’d seen my reflection and thought I was having a fit. I grinned widely.

Sighing, he set various items on the counter. A bowl. Flour. Sugar. Butter. A little bowl of water. Measuring cups and spoons.

“What have you baked before?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Not having a home meant I never really had a kitchen, and no one to teach me,” I told him. “At school, as busy as I was with taking too many classes, I just caught food at the dining hall.”

Juniper studied me for a minute. I think it was what he saw as a sad story that strengthened his resolve to let me help him. I wasn’t overly sad about it.
