For two hours and 22 minutes, I held my breath at certain intervals because when I tried to breathe, I couldn’t hear anything besides the work that my lungs had to do to keep me alive. I held my breath as Miranda took a sip from my soda. I held my breath as she took a sweatshirt out of her purse and draped it across her lap.

After the movie, the four of us made plans to have a drink at one of the nice bars near the theater.

“Just one drink, please?” Miranda asked Seth. Miranda was used to getting her way.

“Just one drink? What about more than one? It’s the weekend. It’s not like we have to go to work tomorrow.”

“What’s it that you do, Seth?” my husband asked, throwing our trash away as we exited the theater.

“I’m a software programmer,” he responded coolly.

“I know, he doesn’t look like a computer nerd. Those tattoos,” Miranda said, patting her boyfriend’s arm. “Doesn’t fuck like a computer nerd, either.”

“How does a computer nerd fuck, may I ask?” Seth said.

“They’re actually not bad. More thoughtful. More deliberate. With you,” Miranda replied, tracing a finger down Seth’s chest, “it’s more wild. You don’t give a shit. You just...go for it.”

She shot a look at me and I felt my face go cold. Her boyfriend was sex on two legs, and the way she was talking was starting to embarrass me. I had no idea what Jake was thinking, but when I looked over at him, when I was finally able to pull my eyes away from Miranda’s, he was grinning like a fool and I swore that if I had the guts to look down I would have seen a hardon growing in his pants.

My husband cleared his throat and adjusted the collar on his shirt.

“How did you guys get here? We have the car, so if you want we could all go over to the bar together. Or I can leave the car here. Hon, what do you think?” he asked me.
