CHAPTER SIX
"I have exciting news."
"You do?" Eastyn pulled up a chair as he held his phone to his shoulder in the break room. "Is it about the new Blue Rayguns single?"
"No, even better."
The way Milo's voice lilted at the end made Eastyn's heart skip. Could this finally be... once in six moons? "No. No way. Is this what I think it is? Really?"
"Really," Milo confirmed. "I have a body on the way."
"Oh wow, that's fantastic!" Eastyn rose from his seat just as quickly as he had sat down. He didn't even know what to say to something like this. It had been nearly two weeks since their double date, and endless nights of talking every spare minute they could. Sometimes, Eastyn would even call Milo as soon as he was done with work, and get Milo to tell Eastyn tour stories or inside music news until he fell asleep.
"What does this mean now?" Eastyn asked. "What's the next stage? And will it be your old body?"
"It's mine, that's for sure. They sent over the photos earlier. The body has been built, the skin and hair, and warming mechanisms all present. So I'll look like a person, but it doesn't quite feel like me yet. I will probably go get a haircut—hell, maybe even dye my new hair, when it's all done with. Just for a change I can see and feel, you know?"
"I do—well, I don't, but I can guess. That's fantastic. How long do you think it will take?"
"Not nearly as long as all this waiting has!" Milo laughed. "I've never done this before, but I see standard reports of about three weeks, all in. Including my own prep time to get used to the body."
"Wow... I don't even know what to say."
"You don't have to say much. I just wanted you to know."
"Thank you for telling me." Eastyn's eyes flitted around the room, fixating on the small digital calendar in the corner where the moon phases for the day/night ratio was displayed. Three weeks from now was when the darkness changed over to moonlight. He flicked back in the calendar system to see how long these patterns had been there. When he reached the sixth interval, he smiled. It really was an upcoming Leap Cycle. Once in six moons. Eastyn laughed.
"What?" Milo asked.
"I was just thinking of what you and Debby told me. Once in six moons. I think it all actually worked out in the end. Three weeks from now is the Leap Cycle. We'll get another day—a human day—of darkness."
"Really? Then my math was right."
"Lots of weird things happen around then, according to her."
"You've never seen one yet? Oh, well I suppose you've only been here a little while."
"Yeah, not long. I'm still experiencing a lot of new things." Eastyn paused, letting his words sink in. Hopefully Milo knew. Hopefully he could sense the dozen hints Eastyn had been dropping over the past few weeks.
"Do you know what else is weird?" Milo asked.
"What?" Eastyn responded, his voice breathy.
