CHAPTER FIVE

She’d slept with Sam Huntington.

Well, not like that. But she’d unleashed all of her crazy on him the night before, and rather than running for the hills, he’d stayed with her. He’d been with her. And the look in his eyes as he’d left her that morning had suggested that whatever nuttiness she’d exposed to him that night had only endeared her to him more.

Amazing, actually.

Kind of like that kiss he gave her, so much like the ones she remembered from the lake house. So different from Craig. So different from anything she’d believed she could hope to have one day. So different from what she’d expected from Sam that morning that it had rendered her incompetent to make a good decision, leading her to quick agreement to go to dinner with him.

“Really, Faith?” she whined, her hands to her hair. “Grow up. Grow up, grow up, grow up!”

If anything would force her to grow up a little faster, it would be a conversation with Gracie. The older, mature, big, bossy sister in her just naturally came out as soon as Gracie began giggling and talking about her own life, and Faith needed this. Gracie was also good, once in a blue moon, for completely honest advice that sometimes bordered on wise, and she needed this, too.

So, she went through her recent call list, touched Gracie’s name, and waited.

Gracie picked up on the second ring.

“On my way to work, Faith!” she said. “Running late!”

This sounded like Gracie.

“And I just hit traffic. Uggggghhhhh,” she groaned. “Why do we even have toll roads when they’re all backed up like this?!”

“Well, at least you have some time to talk to me now,” Faith said.

“I guess,” Gracie muttered. Then, in a brighter voice, “And you’re up early! Lots planned today?”

Faith glanced at her watch again. “Actually, this is late for me. And I have nothing planned but work. Like usual.”

“Babies galore!” Gracie said. “Fertile, fertile Texas.” She’d heard about all the odd hours and the odd patients, the stress and the challenges.

“Yeah,” Faith sighed. “How about you?”

“Meet and greets all day,” Gracie answered. “Had some pervy dad grab my butt yesterday and a hysterical toddler got ice cream in my wig, but even still, greatest job in the world, Faith. Seriously.”

“I can’t imagine,” Faith murmured, thinking of Gracie working all day, flouncing around in her tiny little leotard, giving her flirty smiles to thousands of people, and kissing on infants.

She was Tinkerbell. No, really. She played Tinkerbell at Walt Disney World, just like she’d sworn she would back when she was a tiny girl on her first trip there so many years ago.

“That dad got his,” Gracie said, “when I gasped and shouted that he was trying to get my pixie dust, all while I swatted him on the arm as hard as I could, and told him that he could take a little trip to Neverland. Tinkerbell is sassy like that, so she can get away with more, you know. Princesses can’t be pulling that kind of stuff, but fairies can.
