Isaac went off to join his book group. I felt better for talking to him, even though he had no easy solution for me.

I leaned my back against the step behind me, gazing up at the Celtic cross, blurred now by snow flurries. They fell from infinity, soaring and whirling like a murmuration of birds. It must be chucking-out time at the Fattened Goose. A group emerged, exclaiming at the snow. They stood with their hands and tongues stuck out, just as Noah would have done. Adults are kids. I heard them calling to one another to drive carefully as they got into their cars and crawled away, headlights quavering, wipers batting.

I stood up, shaking ice particles from my hair, stiff from crouching so long in the cold. When the door of the pub opened again, two familiar figures stepped into the streetlight: Scott in his donkey jacket and woollen beanie, Anthony the bearded mountain man. They lingered on the pavement, deep in conversation. Anthony was doing what I couldn’t—staying calm, listening without judgement, being a true friend.

Perhaps he could pull off a miracle. But I doubted it.
