Connor was helping with dinner, and the kitchen was crowded, Jack, Riley, Max, all bustling around making something they called Special Beef. God knows what was in it, apart from beef obviously, but when he left the kitchen to go for a walk, the smell of the stew was amazing.

No one had asked him why he wanted to go outside. No one had stopped him. Connor kissed him and patted his ass, and that was it. He was out.

He just needed air. It was a warmer day today, the early cold that meant he’d needed a coat had gone, and in just his team jersey, he went for a walk behind the barns, stopping by the one that held the family’s horses. Then he touched his toes, stretched his calves, stood tall.

He worked out his tension, leaning so the muscles in his calves warmed up, rolling his shoulders, and then he tipped forward and stood on his hands. He held the position, and in one small jump, he was on his feet and moving into a cartwheel, a backflip, ending two-footed just outside the barn. It felt good to move like that, putting all of his pent-up energy into action. He missed the gymnastics, missed diving, couldn’t wait to work out the kinks that made his muscles twitch. The swimming had helped, but this jumping and spinning, in complete control of his body—he was pumped with adrenaline and landed another backflip with a flourish.

“You practicing for the circus?” a voice drawled from behind him. He swung to face a tall, rangy cowboy with his thumbs in his belt loops.

“No, I’m a diver. It’s gymnastics,” River answered what wasn’t even really a question.

The man held out a hand. “I’m Robbie. Guessin’ you’re Connor’s friend?”

“I am, River. I mean I am a friend of Connors; my name is River.” They shook hands.

“Don’t be jumping like that near the horses, now. You’ll scare them.”

Was this Robbie fucking with him? He certainly sounded like he was teasing, but there wasn’t much to read in his inscrutable expression.

“The horses,” River offered and looked uncertainly in the barn. Robbie laughed then, patted him on the shoulder, hard enough for River to stumble, and then walked away whistling.

River wasn’t sure if he was capable of scaring the horses, but just in case, he moved his backflips and tumbles to the back of the house.

Better to be safe than sorry.

After another landing, he saw that Connor was standing close by, his hands in his pockets and a smile on his face.

“You are so fucking sexy,” Connor said.

He pulled out a hand and held it for River to take, tugging him in for a deep kiss, and River buried his hands in Connor’s hair, losing himself in the embrace.

Was it wrong to think he could kiss Connor forever?

It didn’t go any further. By unspoken agreement, they separated, but even though Connor whispered, “later,” it never came. He was with his family. River went to bed, got off to the thought of Connor and what they could do to each other, and then fell asleep.
