Chapter 16
I felt flattered by her request and nodded smiling and took the book. âOf course you can, sweetheart.â
Her focus seemed to have moved off him however as she entered the foyer, and she nervously took some shuffled steps in my direction before raising her head high to face me with a beaming smile.
âOh wow! It really is you!â she squealed.
I glanced backwards to Mr Holmes who now looked as bewildered as I felt. âThe singer of all singers, Irene Adler! Oh my Goodness, I canât tell you how much of a fan I am, I canât believe itâs you,â she trilled bouncing up and down upon the heels of her feet.
At that point I heard a large exhale of relief from behind me as Mr Holmes cottoned on that his secret was still safe and it was I who the eyes were upon.
I confess I felt somewhat flustered, whilst I am very much so no stranger to adoring fans in the vicinity of a performance house or theatre but I was lest accosted to recognition in more obscure places, let alone a house where the worship by all rights should not have been directed upon myself. However I remembered my manners and responded with a flustered nod and smile âWell, uh, thank you, dear.â
âI was at your last concert in Milan, Daddy took me for my birthday and you were amazing! I have started singing lessons too and piano with Madame Selena Jones! Do you know her? I want to be just like you,â she continued in the same vein speaking without seemingly take any breath or pauses.
When there appeared to be a break in her rapid fire speech I interjected.âOh my, bless you, er ... sorry what is your name?â
She smoothed an invisible wrinkling on her skirt and then looked up at me with her doe-like eyes gleaming with such innocence and genuine adoration. âMiss Mildred Carruthurs, Maâam, oh and is it true are you performing in the pantomime tonight? Because Iâm definitely going; I shall ask my Daddy if I can go as a Christmas treat, and ...â
She was interrupted at that point by a loud, sudden cough and harrumph from the Reverend Archdale. He took his fist away from his mouth and looked like he was about to say something, but clearly decided to refrain.
Taking advantage of the silence once more, Miss Carruthers took out a small purple tinged book, held it out timidly with one hand and a pen in the other and for the first time within our meeting became shy. âI really do not wish to impose, but can I have your autograph?â
I felt flattered by her request and nodded smiling and took the book. âOf course you can, sweetheart.â
As I was flicking through to a blank page, her previous confidence returned ten fold and she animatedly started up again.
âOh, and where did you get that dress you wore for your last concert, the long golden one?â
I finished signing my name with a flourished squiggle; Adler of course, not Norton.
