I dig my face into the crook of her neck. The current turmoil in our bond distracts both of us from the exhaustion of our bodies.

The fever of the heat broke a couple of hours ago, and with each passing minute, the tide of crushing failure rises. My hand warms her lower stomach, my mind searching for something that isn’t there. That doesn’t exist.

Even though I tried to warn Katarina, I’m the one struggling with the disappointment and trying to keep it from flooding my side of our emotional connection.

It was unlikely to happen. That we conceived the first time so easily is something for us to be grateful for, not to expect to happen ever again.

We cuddle silently. Rina runs her fingers through my hair in reassurance and comfort.

“The heat ended so soon, so maybe it happened and we just haven’t realized,” she says.

I shrug. “Maybe, but it’s more likely that this was just a short heat as my body returns to yearly heats.”

“Then we try again next time,” Rina murmurs. “It’s not a bad thing to have to wait. We have such a full life already.”

I sigh in silent agreement. “I just wanted to spoil you. It’s my job to give you everything you wish for.”

“And you don’t want another baby?” she teasingly asks. “How very selfless of you.”

I huff a laugh. “I may be hungry to see you pregnant again.” To see her carrying another impossibility in the face of this modern world. To give Evangeline something that few dragons have, a biological sibling.

“But you’re right,” I say, running my claws through her hair before massaging one of her mating marks. “Our life is full of amazing friends, family, and passion. This disappointment is just a passing sadness for something desired.”

Rina’s smile is soft, and she squeezes the hand over her middle. Tomorrow we’ll return to that life and take Eva to the beach, build sandcastles, and enjoy the fact that however unlikely and fated our journey was, this is our life, and it’s a gift.

A nudge hits my senses right as Rina straightens in my lap. Her eyes are wide. A look of happy disbelief overcoming her features.

“Kalos—” She cuts herself off as tears fill her eyes. Her hand presses my hand harder to her stomach. She doesn’t have to speak. We are one in this moment. My shock doesn’t make me hesitate.

I channel heat energy into my mate, toward the impossible blip of magic inside her, choking out a laugh as the greedy force pulls it in at a hungrier rate than its sister had.

I taper the energy off, and Rina pulls me into a laughing kiss. My hands cradle her face, wiping away the tears from her cheeks.

“Kalos,” she whispers, as if speaking at a normal volume will startle this sacred moment out of reality. “We did it!”

“My queen—” Emotion cuts my words off, and I bury my face in her hair. The excitement and happiness almost too much to bear.

“Thank you,” I breathe into her hair before pulling back to gaze into her emerald eyes.
