Chapter Thirteen

The Monday morning after their picnic, Ida Mae lingered in bed well after dawn. She’d dreamed of Chuck and the essence of that dream brought a smile to her lips.

Intangible, and yet, she could almost reach out and touch this place. Whatever “this place” was. The dream sparked a memory of something familiar. Something she yearned for, but didn’t know why, because Ruby was home. Although she’d toyed with the idea, she’d never leave here. Mom and Dad were here. Chuck. The Come and Get It. Her friends. Everyone and everything that mattered to her, dwelled here.

Nevertheless, her dream evoked indescribable joy because Chuck was there with her, and she sensed this “place” was theirs. Together, they stood on the grassy knoll, wrapped in fall’s red and gold palette, overlooking a sort of stone structure. A home, maybe? One with lots of bright, airy rooms imbued with color. The home seemed to belong to them. And then, she’d awakened.

Ahh. Could it be possible? Ida Mae stretched, relieved this was her day off. She wanted to hold this dream close for a while longer. Knowing Chuck, he was probably up with the birds and already gone for his morning jog. Thinking of him, of their day together yesterday, caused her pulse to race. Had God finally answered her prayer? Lifelong friends to a “couple” within a month. That was the glossy version. The transition had been anything but smooth. In truth, their upgraded relationship status had been decades in the making.

She blew out a sigh and flung an arm across her face. What if her son or daughter found her? What then? How would she explain to Chuck? To Mom and Dad? Like a reunion will ever happen. That kind of thing was best left to reality TV shows and tell-all rags. But oh…how she dreamed to one day meet her baby! The baby who was no longer a child.

The recurring pain sliced through her. Please, Lord. Let him or her be happy and healthy…wherever he or she is. Somehow, remind my child how very much his birth mama loves him. Prayer didn’t fix the past, but it helped connect her to a higher realm. It laid her deepest yearnings at God’s feet.

Help me believe. She added the addendum to her prayer. Help her believe in what? In potential? In a bigger plan than she could foresee and certainly had no control over? If only people could realize how bad choices affected the future. How one devastating lapse in judgment could easily snowball into a lifetime of heartache and regret. She’d never be sorry that she chose life for her child, but if she hadn’t willingly
