Chapter 5

Evelyn

Grace and I are locked in her bedroom, surrounded by rolls of wrapping paper, bags of bows, and more tape than I’ve ever seen in my life.

“It’s all fun and games having five siblings until you have to buy gifts for all of them,” she grumbles, handing me a wrapped gift.

I put a bow and gift tag on it and add it to the stack, all the while thinking about my own sister. Usually, we just exchange gift cards for the holidays, and that’s if we get each other anything. I learned a long time ago that we don’t know each other well enough to buy any thoughtful, meaningful gifts.

“I don’t know,” I say. “I think it’s worth it to have a big family.”

She glances quickly at me, a sly smile on her face. “Do you want more kids?” she asks.

“With the right guy, sure,” I answer. I always wanted a houseful of kids, but after doing it alone with Nolan for the last couple of years, I know how important it is to have not just someone else, but a supportive partner. Of course, that leads me to think of Shep and how good he is with Nolan.

Grace hands me another wrapped package. “Well, I know that the Meadows men will all make good fathers, in case you were considering.”

“What about you?” I ask, changing the subject. “Do you want lots of kids?”

“Maybe someday. The last guy I seriously dated left a while ago, never to return.” She shrugs, and I can tell she still misses him. “For now, this family keeps me busy enough.”

There’s a knock at the door, and Nolan’s voice. “Mom, you have to come see this!”

Grace and I hide the gifts and venture out into the hall, following Nolan downstairs and out the front door. The afternoon sun is shining on another lovely winter day in the mountains. I can’t get over how beautiful it is here, every day looking like a postcard.

That impression becomes even stronger when I hear the clip-clop of horse’s hooves on pavement. Seconds later, a horse-drawn sleigh comes into view, trotting up the driveway. Shep is on the bench, holding the reins. He pulls the horse to a stop and hops down, looking entirely too tempting in a Carhartt jacket and jeans.

“What in the world?” I ask, rubbing a hand on the white horse’s velvety nose to keep myself from staring at the handsome man in front of me.

Shep gestures to the sleigh with a flourish. “Your chariot awaits.”

“Are we all going?” I ask, but when I turn around, Nolan is standing there with my coat, and everyone else has disappeared.

“Sorry, Mom, I can’t go. Santa-Al and I have a movie marathon planned.” Nolan giggles and looks at Shep, letting me know the two of them are in cahoots. “But you and Shep should definitely still go.”

I hesitate but only for a second. Something about this moment seems big, like I’m saying yes to more than just a sleigh ride.
