As if summoned, Caitrin entered the solar, followed closely by Jamie. Bhaltair was glad to see them. They’d have answers to some of his questions.

“Still with us, I see,” Caitrin remarked, approached and took his free hand. “I’m glad of it.”

“Nay half so glad as I am,” Bhaltair replied with a grin, then he sobered. “What have ye learned?”

Caitrin turned to her husband. “Jamie?”

“Little so far. The archer and a few others are locked up. I’ve left him to contemplate his sins while we waited for ye to wake up. The men still out searching havena reported in yet. I brought in the rest of the wounded last night. Is she asleep?”

Bhaltair glanced down at Eilidh. She felt boneless, leaning against him. His arm around her shoulders kept her propped up. “Aye.”

“Thank goodness,” Caitrin said. “She’s exhausted every reserve of strength she possessed.”

“I’ll carry her up to bed,” Jamie offered.

Bhaltair shook his head. “She’ll want to be here. Put her on the cot and let her sleep. Tell the healer. I dinna ken how often they want me drinking willow bark tea. Nasty stuff. But if it keeps me alive and able to act, I’ll drink a hogshead dry.”

“I’ll tell her,” Caitrin said. “Jamie, can ye move Eilidh without waking her?”

“She isna a bairn. I dinna ken, but I’ll give it a try.”

“I’ll help,” Bhaltair offered, but in truth, he wasn’t certain he could stand and stay on his feet, much less help carry the lass.

“Nay need,” Jamie said and lifted her easily with an arm under her thighs and the other behind her back. He moved to the cot and draped her on it, then covered her. “I think she’s down for a while.”

“I hope so,” Caitrin said in agreement.

“Then ye can help me,” Bhaltair said with a meaningful look in Jamie’s direction. Eilidh had been forcing him to drink. It was time to take care of that.

“Under the table. I’ll go fetch the healer,” Caitrin said.

“And some stew,” Bhaltair said, “if ye please.”

“Of course.” She left them.

The healer arrived after a convenient period of time, slapped a hand on Bhaltair’s forehead and pronounced him better. A serving girl followed with a tray bearing a bowl of stew, a hunk of bread and watered ale, then took away the chamber pot.

“Eat all ye can,” the healer advised. “Yer lass will want to ken ye are stronger when she wakes up.”

His lass? Distracted, he tore off a chunk of bread and dunked it in the stew. Rich, meaty aromas drifted up, making his mouth water. But he had sense enough to take it slowly. His lass would be upset if he made himself sick.

He glanced around at the sleeping beauty on the cot behind him. Eilidh barely moved, even to breathe. She was spent.

“What do ye remember about the archer?”

Jamie’s question startled him and he twisted back around to face him. “How do ye mean?”

“How did he behave?”

“He shot me.”

“How? Was he methodical? Emotionless? Or did he enjoy it? How did he relate to the other men, and they to him?”

“I didna have time to notice.
