Kenmore Towers in Kenmore Square is a fifty-year-old architectural post-modern dinosaur of icy edges and spartan stature now just an overpriced dump, as are many of the Boston luxury apartment buildings of yore, like the West-End-obliterating sprawl of Charles River Park. Janis had a two-bedroom condo tricked out in the kind of mousey, arid décor favored by Museum of Fine Arts/Boston Symphony Hall donors, of which she happened to be one.
The building had the warmth of a defunct investment and the quaint charm of a trauma center as the three of them took the elevator up to Janisâs apartment.
âNice digs,â said Null, plopping down hard on the Castro Convertible sofa when they entered the living room.
âItâs amazing that I live so close to Kenmore Square, really just a walk. But this building seems so remote and detached from civilization,â Janis replied.
âBoston isnât much of a city. Start anywhere you like and you can just walk off into the wilderness,â Null opined.
âWhat are we doing, Null? I have no idea where this is going. Still think youâre wiping out all Beantown KP? Even after what you just did?â Boyd asked glumly.
âHe had it coming. They all have it coming.â
âIâm done doing business with them.â
âTheyâre not done doing business with you, Janis.â
âI know. What does that mean?â
âIt means you had better move, and soon, Janis. You can assume Legere and his friends are coming here to find you. You donât want them to find you.â
âNo, youâre right. Anyone want a drink?â
âI do, but Iâm not going to have one.â
âYou always do, Kay. Good idea not to have one.â
Janis went over to the credenza and retrieved a bottle of Crown Royal and a tumbler. She poured herself four fingers and downed it with the surprising quickness of any character in any TV show or movie drinking to drive home a dramatic point. She drove one home straight at Null.
âGive me the bottle, please,â asked Null politely.
âWhy? Can you even get drunk?â
âHe probably can but wouldnât notice it if he did.â Boyd had nowhere to go with her exasperation.
Janis handed the bottle to Null, who opened the front of his topcoat then the front of his shirt and poured the whisky onto the wounds of his chest. Janis jumped back as if wounded herself.
âShit, Null, youâre ruining my sofa!â
âIt shouldnât make a stain. Most of it went where it was needed to go.â
âCouldnât you just use isopropyl alcohol in the bathroom like a normal person?â
Null slugged from the bottle, then put it on the floor by his feet. He wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
âIâd be nervous too, Janis. Iâm not, but I probably should be.â
âYou kicked a fucking hornetâs nest, Null, your usual M.O.,â observed Boyd bitterly. âYouâre a freakinâ menace no matter what you do.â
âYet you feel better since I broke you out of the happy hotel, though. Right?â
âYeah. What of it? Doesnât make you any less of a walking catastrophe.â
âI have no freaking idea what to do here. Am I stuck
