I woke up tired, the dull ache behind my eyes pulsing with every moment. I sat up, my feet resting on the cold hardwood floor. I wanted to crawl back into bed. Throw the covers over my head and sleep for a few more hours. Or all day if possible. Excitement pulsed beneath my skin, causing the exhaustion to recede. I wondered if Jill had figured out who the woman was yet.

In some ways, Jill reminded me of myself. When she wanted to know something or when she was faced with a puzzle, she couldn’t rest or think about anything else until she solved it. Until she figured it out. She probably worked until the sunrise.

I wanted to know where the woman came from and who killed her. Who had the means to pay someone to get rid of her body, and had they done it before? Were Ed and Killian just delivery drivers, or did they work for the person who killed her?

A million questions whirled around in my head while I got ready. I hoped Jill had the answer to at least one of them. If we could figure out who the victim was, it would make it easier to figure out who killed her. People, more often than not, were killed by people they knew. Especially women. Women were killed by a boyfriend, husband, or sometimes a friend.

I didn’t want to assume it was her husband or boyfriend, but if I had to make a guess... I made our breakfast sandwiches and was on my way out just when the elevator doors opened.

“Right on time,” said Tony.

I smiled and handed him his sandwich. “You’re up early this morning.”

He shrugged. “Yeah. I couldn’t really sleep last night.”

“Were you in pain?” I stepped onto the elevator.

He shook his head. “No, not really. I just couldn’t stop thinking about the case. Kept wondering who the body was, and then I started thinking—”

“How many bodies they had done this to?” That was what I had been thinking last night. Images of dead bodies had been swirling in my head all night. How many times did they do this? How many bodies had they gotten rid of? That was my main question. And it was one I didn’t think I would ever get the answer to. They probably couldn’t answer that question. None of them. Not Emanuel, Killian, or Ed. They probably lost count at some point.

“Yeah. All of that. I can’t believe this has been going on for so long. I just kept thinking of all the bodies, all the murders we will never solve because the bodies are gone. All evidence is gone. All the families wondering, and they will never know.”

I pressed my shoulder into him. I understood what he was saying. The emotions that realization stirred in me were hard to press down. The frustration of never being able to solve these cases was palpable.

“I know. But what we need to focus on is what we can do instead of what we can’t.
