Chapter 26 - Samuel

She’s safe, at least. Samuel thought as he let Charlotte rest her wet face on his chest. Though the screams she made when he had popped her shoulder back into the joint still echoed through his mind.

Sniffing, Charlotte sat up and wiped her face on the blanket. Sam’s eyes lingered from her face to her bare arms. The bandages he had placed made her look like an Egyptian mummy, and the bruises could be seen where there were no bandages. Her legs were the same.

“Where are my clothes?”

Samuel looked up at her face and realized he had been staring at her body. She probably thought he was scanning her for visual pleasure.

“They are badly ruined,” he spoke quickly, turning away and walking over to the vanity. He placed his hand on the folded jeans and shirt. “I had to toss your jacket away, it was burned quite a bit.”

“Did you get burned, too?” She asked, coming over to examine her clothes. Her arm brushed against his, and his hair stood up under his sweater.

“No as much as you.” He said, breathing in slowly through his nose before stepping away from her. “You were closer to the blast.”

“The people who think I’m dead,” her voice was shaky, recovering from the earlier sobs, “Won’t they look for me, or parts of me?”

“There were a lot of civilians there.” He said, remembering all of the passengers and families hugging them goodbye. “They think you are dead.”

“So what’s the plan?” She asked, and Samuel laughed. “What? I don’t know what to do in this situation. I have to go into hiding, right? Get a new identity?”

“Yes.” Samuel finished packing up the medical kit, turning his back as Charlotte pulled on her clothes. “I’ll take you west to see a friend of mine. She’ll be able to make you a new ID. Get some new clothes and a new car. Then we can plan from there.”

“You’re not the one that’s dead, Sam.” Her voice held some humor, but mostly filled with questions. “Why are you helping me? You could go back home.”

“Well, I...” He turned around expecting to be dressed, but forgot how hard it can be to put pants on with one arm. Charlotte was tugging the skinny jeans up, trying to get them over her hips. Her back was to him, so he saw the curve of her lower back disappeared into purple floral-patterned panties. He had seen them when treating her wounds, but was focused on healing her. Now that she was better, he couldn’t help watch as the jeans slid over her butt. “Do you need help?”

There was a moment of grunting as Charlotte tried to pull the pants up herself. “Yes.”

Cautious, Samuel stepped behind her and hovered his hands above her hips. He stared at the soft skin on her neck, and how her shirt fit close to her body.

“Can I touch you?” he asked, not wanting to surprise her.

He saw an invisible string pull along her spine and up through her neck.
