WILDER

“We agreed,” my arm crosses over my chest as he packs up his things to leave for the day. “You can’t change things as you see fit. I did everything you asked.”

He looks at me with a bored expression on his face, like he couldn’t be bothered to deal with my issues. It drives me crazy how he acts like I’m overreacting. My feelings are valid and right now, I have every right to be angry. My emotions have been festering for a while. He places his hands behind his back as he waits for me to calm down. It’s what I’d normally do.

Not this time.

I’ve had enough. Enough of the coddling, the placating false promises and the ridicule. Yeah. I hate that the most. “We didn’t agree to anything. You said you felt trapped in this house and wanted to see more of the world. I said I’d think about it.”

He’s lying.

It’s not how the conversation went at all. I told him I didn’t want to be here anymore. I wanted to reconnect with the people I left behind. The ones I miss with every fiber of my being. I can barely remember the times before I was forced here. Lured under false pretenses. He didn’t mention once I got here, I’d never leave the house. I can’t remember much of the real world, actually. Not the sound of birds chirping, not the smell of rain, or what it’s like to have a conversation with someone other than him.

I am his prisoner, and he won’t let me forget it.

My eyes well as my frustration comes at a standstill. I hate this part. When I cry because he twists the words to fit his needs. He said if I really wanted to leave I could; when the day comes he wouldn’t stand in my way. He said to give it time and he’d help me pack himself. I hadn’t seen him for a month after we had that conversation. I took it as my sign I could leave. I packed my measly belongings; took one final look at the house I’ve lived in for so long and said goodbye. It was time for me to live the life I dreamed of since I was eighteen. He had other plans.

I hadn’t been out the house for two whole hours before he found me and dragged me back here kicking and screaming. And now he’s leaving again. A tear slides down my face and slowly glides down onto the floor. “Why are you doing this to me?” my voice cracks as my shoulders drop in defeat. I know what will happen if I continue to fight. My ribs barely recovered the first time I stood my ground.

His steps echo in the living as he makes his way toward me. His large hands hold my face as he places a soft kiss on my forehead. “There’s nothing for you out there. I’m protecting you.”

I scoff and nudge my head out of his hold.
