My feet pounded the pavement, my head focused on said feet as I made my way from the bus stop to the hospital on the other side of town. I was lazy and got to the town circular, knowing I couldn’t walk the entire way in my current state. I also wasn’t in a fit state to drive myself.

Sleep had eluded me.

All night I was up tossing and turning, apprehensive for the day to come, but also confident, too—to a degree.

Oh, let’s be honest, I didn’t know what or how I was really thinking.

Once I reached my destination, I stopped to take a deep breath; the sun shining through the clouds into my eyes, spring on the horizon.

Hovering outside of the clinic, my entire body was on edge. Every nerve buzzing, my heart pounding.

I was acting rash. Or was I? I wasn’t sure anymore.

My mind was at odds with itself, running around in circles.

Really, I should’ve tried harder to talk to Grayson, tell him how I was feeling about everything, but the way he looked at me the last time we spoke was burned into my mind.

He looked at me as if I was pond scum, ruining his new trainers.

He hadn’t even given me the chance to talk it all through with him—to talk of our options. He just dismissed me. The way I expected from others, but never from him.

When I made the appointment at the clinic, I wasn’t sure I’d show. It wasn’t a definitive appointment, but more one where I could learn my options. Consider all the alternatives and pick the one that sounded best for me.

And although the statement my body, my choice came to mind whenever I thought about it, so did the fact that for me personally, it didn’t feel fair to exclude Gray from the decision entirely. No matter how shit he treated me. Because either way, it would affect him going forward—affect his life one way or the other.

The time on the large clock face on the front of the hospital told me it was nearly time to head inside, yet my feet wouldn’t move from their spot.

All I had to do was enter the white door behind me that read Family Planning clinic and tell the receptionist my name. That was the first step.

My eyes were fixated on the door.

A familiar face barrelled into my line of vision and my feet had to move, so I wasn’t flattened by her. She exited the door with such force I thought she might have taken it off its hinges, but when I looked back, it was still there.

‘What are you doing here?’ Remi spat, her eyes red-rimmed and bloodshot. She’d been crying, but the tears had dried now, her makeup-free face looking wholesome and so very sad. ‘Did you follow me?’

‘Why would I follow you?’ I scoffed. Remi and I weren’t exactly what you’d call friends. Especially after she was the one responsible for everybody learning Layla’s past—and twisting it into something it wasn’t—all so she could win Dean back.
