Chapter 10.

Benedict.

“What are you trying to do to us, I? Destroy every small creature comfort we poor, old folks have?”

My mother wept and my father stood over his wife, shaking his head in dismay and disappointment.

I ran my hand down my face, my head throbbing in a monotonous thumping rhythm that reminded me of the metronome on a grandfather clock in the hallway.

It had been a very long week.

“Mother. Father. I have spent the past week trying to explain this to you both. You need to listen... and listen properly. You have spent all the money you had, and most of the money you were likely to make in the next ten years. You have lived well beyond your means for a long time.”

My father flushed, in anger or embarrassment, I wasn’t sure, but I no longer cared. This mess was their fault, not mine.

“We assumed you would fix everything once you inherited,” My father said, his voice as stiff as his spine.

I felt my mouth drop open as I stared at my father. “Fix it?” I repeated as I leaned forward in my chair and glared at my parents. “If you mean, you thought I would marry some poor woman who had enough money to make our lives bearable, then you don’t know your son very well.”

My parents shared a long look, my mother’s tears disappearing as quickly as they had arrived. “What do you mean, Benedict?”

I gathered the anger that had tightened my gut and gave my parents my harshest stare. “I mean, since you have spent every penny we have, including my livelihood, I am disappearing to Europe shortly, to gain an occupation. I will be gone a long time. I have sold some of my shares and rented out two of the country properties.”

My parents inhaled sharply, and I knew what they were devastated about. It was the fact that their four homes wouldn’t all be available for a visit at any time. They certainly wouldn’t miss me when I was gone, I was sure.

“I will give you both a strict budget and I will put money in the accounts from my wages to make sure the debts are paid off. If all goes to plan, then no matter how long you live, you won’t run out of money. But you must live within your means. I cannot support you completely.”

My mother burst into tears and my father glared at me, his rose-colored cheeks reddening further.

I loved how this was all news to them... and apparently all my fault, also.

“I leave tomorrow, so please let me know if you have any questions before then.”

I moved to the door and both my parents ignored me, too devastated that their lives of comfort were finished.

“Can I do anything for you, my lord?” the elderly butler asked as he stepped forward.

I turned to him with a smile. “No, thank you, Reynolds. You have been a wonderful friend to me for many years. Please keep an eye on them and send me a letter if they get into any real trouble.
