I’ve wanted to look at the section of the Bible with the writing in it,” Jo said, “to see what Ma’s full name was before she married Pa.”

“I brought our Bibles along with me.” Ursula looked at the bag she’d brought from her stone house. She had taken the Bibles with her for the winter and then brought them back to this house where she hoped to stay.

She thumbed through the old black Bible until she found those pages.

“I always thought it was a terrible thing that someone had written in the Bible.” Jo leaned close to study the writing.

“Here’s Ma. It says her name was Susan Domanski. My middle name is Susan. I was named for Ma.” Ursula felt a deep trembling. “What if she has parents still living? Or had brothers and sisters? We could have a family somewhere. Aunts and uncles, cousins.”

Jo looked up at Dave. “What do you think? Is there a way to track Ma down? Find out if she has family?”

Dave shrugged and looked at Mitch.

“I’ll get someone on it right away,” Mitch said. “It’s not for sure, but there’s a good chance she’s from around here since I don’t think your pa sounds like a man who traveled far and wide. Unless she was traveling through with her family, and she married your pa and got left behind as her family and the wagon train went on west.”

Mitch took the Bible and studied the name. “Domanski. I’ll bet she’s Polish or maybe German.”

“Grandpa used to say Ilsa took after her ma. He used the words black Irish. Ursula looked lost. “Is Irish different than Polish?”

Mitch nodded, then went on. “The name Domanski isn’t an Irish name, but they might’ve had some Irish heritage. Your grandpa had to get that idea from somewhere. Maybe your ma told him that. The name is unusual. I can try and find out if there are people named Domanski around here. There are tax rolls and census records. If she did have family close, those folks might have come up to visit you or gone searching for you, if they knew your mother had children.”

Shaking his head, he continued, “It’s worth a try searching for them. If your parents married nearby, there might be a marriage record. There might even be folks who remember it. If there was no parson around, and there might not have been nearly thirty years ago, then I don’t know how to find a marriage record. But Ursula is twenty-seven years old. We’ll go back about a year before that and search.”

“What else do you remember about your parents, Ursula?” Mitch seemed to think the matter was settled for now. But Ursula wanted to go running down the mountain and just search everywhere for someone who was her family. She’d never felt such a longing in her life.

Mitch’s question distracted her from the almost frantic need to start hunting.

“I can remember Ma and Grandma talking a lot and laughing. They mostly got along well.
