My foot stays down on the pedal of the limo. The gas gauge says we're at a fourth a tank. We have one gun and only the clothes we're wearing. Night has fallen over New York, and I keep the limo in the far-left lane and head north like a bat out of hell.

Lila keeps her arms folded next to me. She's mad, lips pursed and eyes refusing to look my way.

I grit my teeth. "I'm sorry," I mutter. "I didn't mean to be such a dick about it. I'm just, I'm really tense right now."

She's quiet.

"Lila?"

She doesn't respond. I look her way. Her breasts look twice as large in that tight, red dress. Her legs look smooth, and my hands crave the feeling of her thighs.

"Lila, come on," I say as I raise my voice. "Talk to me!"

"Where are we going?" she asks.

I sigh in relief. At least she's talking. "North. I'm getting you across the border."

"Into Canada?"

I laugh. "No, Iceland. Of course, Canada. What else is -" I look her way and realize she's not finding it as funny as I do, so I shut up. "Yeah, Canada. Gonna get you across. I know a place to hide out up there. You'll be safe."

She unfolds her arms. "Canada? Rex, I don't have any money, or clothes. And you're going to take me to a whole other country?"

"I have money," I tell her, "And I can get you clothes. I can get you anything you need, Lila. Trust me, I've got a plan for us." I look her way, and finally she looks back with those hazel eyes. I ask her, "Do you trust me?"

She watches me, and her eyes look down to my lips, over my body, then back to my eyes. "Yes."

We're quiet for a minute, and I can't keep my mind off her or my eyes from stealing looks at her body. All the rush and thrill has me bursting with protective testosterone. And when I look at her, I get hard, and it's harder to concentrate on the highway when my cock aches for her. She's so close, and I can smell her perfume. I could drown in it. I could drown in it with my lips on her skin.

"What happened?" She puts her hand on my shoulder. Her fingertips brush over the scratches I got when James dragged me across the dock. "How bad are you hurt?"

I shrug. "Not that bad. That prick tried to throw me off a dock into the Hudson." I wink at her, a cocky smile on my face. "But I got out of it for you, baby."

She doesn't smile back. There's a fear in her eyes. "Did you kill him? Did you kill James?"

I lose the smile and look forward. "Does it matter if I did?"

She purses her lips together, and she leans away from me. "Then that makes you as bad as them."

I grit my teeth because her virtue, even in a situation likes this, drives me crazy. Gripping the steering wheel tight, I take a deep breath and tell her, "I didn't kill him.
