Chapter 4

Monday, I answered the phone to Dane's rich growl.

"Got a name for you. Write this down."

I swiveled at my work desk, grabbing for a pen even as I teased, "So bossy."

"Babe," he said, and it was enough to make me wet.

"Ready." I wrote down the name and number he dictated. "Who's this?"

"Lawyer. Specializes in divorce, owes me a solid. I told him your situation and he says don't wait to call."

I froze. "Dane…"

"Cassandra. Your ex can't walk all over you. Not anymore."

"Dane," I whispered.

"You need someone to fight for you. I'm that man. But this isn't my arena. So talk to the lawyer. At least know your options."

"I'll call him."

"You'd better. Or you answer to me."

"Mmm, I might like that."

His chuckle rumbled through the phone and I crossed my legs, afraid of soaking the chair.

"You would, baby. I'd make sure of it."

An hour later, I had a notepad full of legal advice. It seemed that Chad exploited both my ignorance of the system and my unwillingness to stand up for myself. Any assets acquired during marriage were joint assets, the lawyer told me. That meant the house and car and all property were equally his and mine.

Dane's friend, who not only owed him a favor but seemed to have run in with my ex and didn't particularly like him, would send a letter outlining my requirements. The document even demanded repayment for the storage unit… and the cost of reframing Gramp's picture.

I would make it easy on Chad to get out of the marriage. Easy, but fair.

You think Chad will take this lying down? my brain fretted.

No. But neither will Dane.

And if it came to a fight, my money was on my Devil Dog.

“You got plans tonight?” Just seeing the text and imagining his large hand holding the phone waiting for my response gave me a tingle.

“Nope. All yours,” I texted back.

“You bet your sweet ass you are.”

I chortled, and glanced around to make sure none of my coworkers noticed.

“Dinner, my place, 7.”

“K. Can I bring anything...other than aforementioned ass?”

I imagined his beautiful lips creasing, breaking into a smile that dazzled whoever was lucky enough to be there to see it.

Oh my god, Cassie, what are you thinking? Do you have feelings for this guy?

Yes! my lady bits shouted.

Be careful, my brain warned. You just met him. It’s not smart to get sucked in so soon.

Whether it was smart or not, I couldn’t wait to get home to wash off the work day and complete the full “get ready for a hot date” ritual so I could drive over to Dane’s.

All clean and pretty in a light top and miniskirt, I bounced up to his apartment door and then sent him a “here!” text. I half expected him to be dressed to go out to eat, but when he opened the door he was barefoot, holding two sodas, wearing jeans with no shirt.

“Hey, baby.”

“Uhkk,” I said. My gaze wandered up and down and got lost in the perfection of his chest.
