CHAPTER 22

Back To The Beginning

Buffalo, NY

Kevin met them at the gate, all smiles and twinkling eyes. “Welcome back to New York, FBI and partner.” He reached for Meredeth’s shoulder bag, and she let him take it, then stepped in for a quick kiss hello. “Do you guys need to eat? Did they feed you on the plane?”

Meredeth glanced at Bobby, who stood behind her, grinning from ear to ear. She arched an eyebrow and pointed at Kevin with her head.

“Mere’s on a hunger strike in the mornings,” he said, “but I could eat a little.”

Kevin’s gaze came to rest on her face. “Nausea,” she said with a small flick of her shoulders. “Coffee with lots of cream and sugar will do me fine.”

“No, it won’t, Meredeth Connelly,” said Kevin in a firm voice. “Fruit? Pastry?”

Meredeth shuddered.

“Then we’ll swing by the house for fried eggs and toast.”

“No time for all that, Kevin,” she said, though she slid her hand down his arm and squeezed his hand. “I’ll find something that works wherever we stop for the bottomless pit.”

“Hey! I resemble that remark.” Bobby chuckled. “I only need to eat ten or eleven times a day.”

“And yet you still keep your girlish figure,” said Kevin in a droll voice. “You should write up your diet for Redbook or something.”

“Nah, I wouldn’t want the secret of my success to get out.”

“Come on, chicken-heads,” said Meredeth. “Let’s get on the road to Alden. We can find food on the way.”

“Speaking of,” said Kevin, “I got you all set up with the warden at Wende Correctional. I know him from my BCI days, and we’ve kept in touch. He said to tell you that he can make John Doe come to the meeting, but he can’t make him talk.”

Meredeth hitched her shoulders. “Somehow, I doubt that’s going to be a problem. The man likes the sound of his own voice.”

“As I understand it,” said Kevin, “he’s refused to speak since his sentencing.”

“He’ll speak to me, I think.”

“I hope so.” Kevin held the door for her, and she stepped out into the brisk Buffalo morning air. “Otherwise, this trip will have been a waste of your time. Unless…”

Grinning, Meredeth took his hand again. “Unless what, cowboy?”

“Mom, Dad, stop talking dirty in front of me,” said Bobby with a laugh.

“I thought you two might stay here for the night. We could talk about the case, then—”

“No matter how much I want to, we have to go back tonight, Kevin,” said Meredeth with a tiny shake of her head. “The Pass-A-Grille Killer is accelerating at a pace we can’t hope to match as it is. He took victims two days in a row.”

Kevin’s expression soured. “I thought he was probably on a lunar cycle.”

Meredeth gave her chin a sharp jerk to the left and then the right. “Something has changed, and he’s accelerated at a rate I’ve never seen before.”

“It’s like he’s behind schedule,” said Bobby.

“Perish the thought,” grunted Meredeth.

They all piled into Kevin’s HVPD cruiser and drove toward Alden, New York—the town where the Wende Correctional Facility stood.
