Chapter 12

Eleven hours later, the vibration of Matteo’s engine died down beneath my thighs. He kicked the stand of his bike and swung his leg over the seat, then took my hands in his large ones and helped me off.

We were in a town I’d never heard of and had driven two hours to get here.

It was dark around us, the only signs of life or civilization coming from a dilapidated building that had a neon sign that bathed the parking lot in hues of purple and read “Madame Rita’s Shack of Undead and Undying”.

Her slogan blinked underneath in broken neon letters, blue this time.

If you want a large, go to McDonald’s. If you want a medium? Come to Madame Rita!

“Well, that’s a…slogan for you,” Rex said.

I blinked and nodded. My legs were shaky as I leaned against Rex, who’d appeared at my side as soon as I’d dismounted from the bike. He wrapped a strong arm around my waist and hugged me close, his voice tinged with worry.

“You feeling okay?”

“I think so. Feeling a bit woozy again, but I can deal with that.”

His fingers tightened on my hip. “You’re going to be fine soon, don’t worry.” His voice was soft and reassuring.

I wished that I could be as sure. The guys had spent the day taking turns to feed me small amounts of energy to keep my wound from bleeding. There was no way it should’ve all burned off this quickly.

Damon had figured out after I’d started bleeding again an hour after he’d healed me once more that we couldn’t carry on like this forever. It wasn’t viable. Not for any of us.

The others agreed. Lachlan mentioned that he knew a powerful medium only a couple of hours away, and so we’d all packed up and headed to this town. We rented an old cabin on its outskirts that used to be a bed and breakfast and while Brie and her guys were warding it with spells and charms, we’d headed right to Madame Rita’s.

Parker was sure that he’d found some charms that could keep Luci at bay for at least a little while, but I just knew that it was only a matter of time before she found us there. I was in no condition to be of any use in a fight, not when I was barely strong enough to make it to Madame Rita’s door without help from Rex. This had to work.

I had to admit, though, some of the shaking in my legs could have been attributed to the fact that I was about to meet my father, who just so happened to be the current ruler of the underworld, for the first time.

What do I even call him?

A sliver of light was visible under the door when we reached it, but there was no bell, and loud music in a language I didn’t know blasted from the inside.

Lach’s eyes searched the door, though I didn’t know what for. His fingers went to the door and it looked like he was whispering to it.
