Chapter 10

Vanna

Mid-January

As Vanna lit the candles and incense strewn around the living room, she couldn’t help but smile. A full month and a half had passed since the last time she’d seen or even spoken to Hassan. So much had changed within her life, and he had been the first person she wanted to share those changes with. She couldn’t even find the ability to be sad over the lack of his presence because she knew it was for the best. Hassan was on his way home, and he wanted to make hers his first stop.

Since she was unsure what the vibe would be, she went into the bathroom to unwrap her bra strap length dark red hair. Freshly showered and oiled, Vanna sprayed a few pumps of her Flowerbomb perfume before slipping into an olive colored two-piece PrettyLittleThing joggers and crop top sweatshirt set. At the sound of the doorbell, she applied a coat of lip gloss to her lips and headed to the door.

The moment she opened the door and saw Hassan standing behind it, she had to keep herself from whimpering. A month was a long damn time to not see his handsome face. Those dark eyes. His pink lips. And deep dimples. As soon as she opened her arms, Hassan was lifting her into the air.

“I missed your ass so fucking much,” Hassan confessed before squeezing her tighter and kissing her neck.

“I missed you too. I can’t believe you’re finally back.”

Kicking the door closed, Hassan carried her to the living room and sat down, still holding her. Even though he tried to look at her, Vanna kept her arms wrapped around his neck, making him laugh.

“I can’t look at you?”

“Not right now. I just want to hold you.”

His large hands ran up and down her back. The crisp winter air had them cold, but Vanna didn’t even care. She’d gladly feel the chill against her bare skin if it meant having the warmth of his heart radiating into hers.

“I want to hear all about what I’ve missed.”

“Okay, but you go first.”

Finally, Vanna unraveled her arms from around him so he could take his coat off. After placing it on the coat rack, she went into the kitchen to fix them both a cup of spiked hot apple cider. Because of him, she’d started keeping both brown and clear alcohol in her pantry, though she always preferred clear.

“Ain’t much to tell,” Hassan started. “We spent the first two weeks talking about the shit we needed to change and the last four weeks working on changing it. I’m supposed to have weekly sessions with one of the therapists for six months just to make sure I stay on track, but that’s pretty much it.”

“Do you feel like you’ve changed any?”

He shrugged. “Not really. I probably won’t until I’m in a situation that would usually cause me to pop off. I guess I do feel like I’m more stable mentally and emotionally. And they gave me some ways I can calm down and think things through before immediately spazzing on a motherfucker.
