TWENTY-TWO

After calling his wife, Sandy, Rowley pulled on his slicker and peered out the glass doors of the office. Mother Nature was dancing with Thor by the sound of the thunder, and a lightshow stretched from one end of town to the other and beyond. He turned to Rio. “It’s nasty out there. I figure we should go in my truck. I’ll drop you by here to pick up your vehicle after the interview.”

“Yeah, that’s fine by me.” Rio pushed on his Stetson and smiled. “Especially as you have the coffee.” He turned and gave Maggie a wave. “See you in the morning.”

“Drive safe now.” Maggie smiled at them.

Bending his head against the rain, Rowley ran to his truck with Rio splashing along behind out of the parking space. “How do you want to play this?”

“You take the lead and I’ll just jump in if necessary.” Rio pulled an energy bar from his pocket and slowly unwrapped it. “I’ve been doing a deal of research on serial killers, and don’t you think it’s unusual for them to be killing during this unusual weather event?”

Dragging his thoughts away from his wife and the twins waiting for him at home, Rowley shrugged. “It’s a compulsion to kill, so maybe the weather doesn’t make much difference. Ask Kane. He has details like that at his fingertips.”

“I analyzed the conditions behind some of the cases that I was researching and came up with two different conclusions.” Rio had that faraway look he always had when he was analyzing situations. “The first one is that a killer might believe that heavy rain destroys evidence.” He waved a hand. “When sometimes it’s the complete opposite. Footprints in soft dirt, evidence on the victim’s clothes can give a positive identification of the location of the murder.” He held up two fingers. “The second is that bad weather would keep witnesses away from the murder scene. These people are very smart and they’d know it’s unusual for foot patrols to be conducted during a storm. Most cops would be sticking to their patrol cars.”

Rowley turned his truck onto Pine. “Yeah, all of that makes sense, but it wouldn’t work for a thrill killer. They’re opportunistic and not many people are walking the streets during thunderstorms like we’ve been having over the last week. I figure whoever’s committing these murders has it planned down to the last second.”

He slowed the truck and searched for number twenty-six. The rusty gate hung open on a jaunty angle, one end resting heavily against a pine tree. Ahead, a dark driveway vanished into a maze of trees and vegetation. Vines wrapped around every tree, forming a canopy that blocked out the last rays of daylight. Rowley unconsciously touched the butt of his weapon. Driving onto a person’s property at dusk always posed a risk. Even without a TRESPASSERS WILL BE SHOT sign, the “castle law” in Montana gave residents the right to defend themselves against intruders walking onto their property. In fact, all Montanans had the right to defend themselves anywhere if they believed they were in danger.
